Update on UNL Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln [UNL] made the decision to potentially close the Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design [TMFD] due to budgetary issues caused by the pandemic. On October 14th, the Academic Planning Committee held a virtual hearing to discuss the potential closure. During the hearing, nearly 200 participants watched as professors, students, alumni, and community leaders spoke in opposition to the department closure. For over four hours, speakers generated serious discussions on the university’s failure to follow its own guidelines and procedures while making budgetary cuts.
Sheree Moser had been updated on the status of the department recently. The best way to support the department at this time is writing to senators. See the link for the "Ways to Help TMFD Guide” and the Letter Template is on the third page, Senators names are on the 4th page. Here is a link to the Nebraska Legislature website to “Find your Senator & District” https://nebraskalegislature.gov/senators/senator_find.php.
This is a great opportunity for your FCCLA members and FCS students to demonstrate civic engagement (it's the Public Policy Advocate STAR Event in action!). Teach students how to write a proper letter to a senator about an issue that we are passionate about. We would love to see some of the letters and responses from senators as well.
