Reminder of School Illness Policy
If your child is sick, (vomiting, diarrhea, fever over 100, communicable illness such as strep or flu) he/she should stay home from school. Students may return to school once they have been fever free without the use of acetaminophen or ibuprofen, with no vomiting, and no diarrhea for 24 hours. For communicable illnesses requiring antibiotics, students need to be on antibiotic therapy AND fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. For common viruses/coughs and colds it is not usually appropriate to keep children out of school for the duration of symptoms, however the student’s cough should be manageable and the child should be eating and drinking adequately.
Please contact your child’s physician if you suspect your child may have the flu or strep throat for further guidance. Additionally, if your child has been diagnosed with flu, strep throat or any other communicable disease, please contact the TMS Health Office as a courtesy so that we may track illnesses and do our best to keep all students free from disease.
Illness Prevention
Frequent hand washing at home and in school is a must to limit illness transmission!
Get vaccinated against the flu!......It’s not too late
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is advising that the single best way to prevent influenza is vaccination of everyone six months and older. For more information please visit: https://www.mass.gov/influenza.
Please send your child to school with a refillable water bottle daily: Refillable water bottles are strongly encouraged to keep the children hydrated throughout the day. In addition to keeping the children properly hydrated, water helps to soothe sore throats and quiets coughs.
Medication Policy: All medications must be kept in the nurse’s office and overseen by the RN to keep all students safe. Students are not permitted to keep medications in their backpacks or lockers with the exception of Epi-pens or inhalers if deemed appropriate by his or her MD. Any medications to be administered by the school nurse must be accompanied by a signed physician’s order and written parental consent. This includes prescription and non-prescription medications.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please contact Michelle Riley, RN at 978-649-3115.
Additionally, we are in need of Clorox Wipes here at TMS to try to combat the germs. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
