Information on Golden Keyboard Awards, Quarter Average Calculation, and our next Intermediate School Improvement Team Meeting Announced
Dear Intermediate Families:
This past Friday we mailed home your child's 2nd Quarter Report Card, along with your child's mid-year iReady diagnostic reports for reading and math, and a letter explaining your child's mid-year benchmark assessment score in ELA and math. If you do not receive your child's report card by the end of the day on Wednesday, please contact us at 483-5242.
Golden Keyboard Awards: This year we are again awarding the Golden Keyboard Award to the homeroom in each grade level that has the most combined growth in reading and math, as measured by the iReady diagnostic in January. This amount of growth is determined by the percentage of students in each homeroom who:
- Are on pace to achieve typical annual growth
- Have already met their typical annual growth and are on pace to achieve stretch growth
- Have already met both their typical growth and stretch growth goals
These percentages are used in a formula to determine the homeroom in each grade level who have shown the most combined growth in reading and math. Congratulations to the following homerooms for earning the 2021 Golden Keyboard Award:
- Ms. Arnold's and Mrs. Gibson's Grade 4 Homeroom
- Mrs. Sweeney's Grade 5 Homeroom
- Mrs. Ludden's Grade 6 Homeroom
Quarter Average Calculation: Some parents might notice a slight change in the overall quarter average on their child's report card. The reason for this is a correction that was made the way that SchoolTool calculated the quarter averages. There was an error in the calculation of overall quarter averages on Quarter 1 report cards that was not caught until after report cards were already sent along with letters for students on Honor Roll, High Honor Roll, and Principal's List. I did not want take any of those accolades away from kids after they were told they were on those lists. However, we did make sure that error was fixed before running 2nd quarter report cards. The source of the error on Quarter 1 report cards is that grades for all unified arts courses (Art, Music, PE, & Library) were calculated at the same weight as math and ELA. The unified arts courses only meet once per week, so those grades are supposed to be "weighted" at 0.25, versus math and ELA that are "weighted" at 1.0. We did check to make sure that SchoolTool was calculating the quarter averages correctly for 2nd quarter report cards. Please note, while the average may look different for Quarter 1, we are not changing the lists for those who earned Honor Roll, High Honor Roll, and Principal's List for Quarter 1. If you have any questions about the calculation of your child's overall average for Quarter 2, please contact Principal Gene Hoskins by email at ehoskins@soduscsd.org or School Counselor Mrs. Bucenec by email at mbucenec@soduscsd.org.
