Fort Smith Public Schools

Third Quarter

Purpose of the GATE program:

The Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE) Provides enrichment and advanced learning opportunities in an ongoing process through which we develop the emerging strengths of each identified student in intellect, motivation, creativity, and leadership. By offering differentiated learning opportunities, we provide a rigorous academic environment to meet the educational needs of our advanced learners.

Stay connected with your child's GATE teacher through Google Classroom, Schoology or Protopage.

Stories in Action

Students have been studying the main elements of a story: point of view, the protagonist vs the antagonist, setting, conflict, the characters and solutions. We have looked at all of these elements with a focus on fairy tales. At the end of the quarter, students will be given a choice board with various choices on ways to re-write or retell a familiar fairy tale or myth changing some of the main story elements.

Some of the choices include creating a comic, writing a skit, posting and answering a help wanted ad, making a travel brochure to fairy tale land, or creating a movie poster and press release describing the plot of the new movie.

By using choice boards, it provides students with the power to choose "how" to show their learning. This freedom encourages them to be more responsible, accountable and independent in their learning. By providing choices, we allow students to take ownership of their learning as well as create a product that feels authentic to them. They are able to work on something that they're good at creating, or they try something they want to get better at, or that challenges them.

We can't wait to see what your child creates!

Some of the GATE students have chosen to learn sign language.
