The Meadow

By: Kate Knapp Johnson

Half the day lost, staring (A)
at this window. I wanted to know (B)

just one true thing (C)

about the soul, but I left thinking (D)
for thought, and now - (E)
two inches of snow have fallen (F)

over the meadow. Where did I go, (G)
how long was I out looking (H)
for you?, who would never leave me, (I)
my withness, my here. (J)

There is no rhyme scheme it is free verse.

Tone

This poem's tone is regretful because the author was saying that half the day was lost and that she wanted to know one true thing about the soul and regretted that she couldn't. Also, she was regretting the fact that she lost herself and it became to late to get herself back.

Theme

This poem's theme is that you should advantage of the time you have to achieve your dreams because if you don't then your dreams will past you by and you will not be able to go back and change what happened. For example, when the poet said where did I go, how long was I out looking for you? She lost time trying to help someone else and misses her chance to achieve her dreams.
