Remote Learning Weekly Update - June 18, 2021

Big picture

Dear Selby Families,

We are on the countdown to our final days of this school year -- and what a year it has been! We had a fun week with virtual field trips, our carousel with numerous activities offered by our staff. Thank you to all of you who have been able to keep engaging online with our educators.

Today is an exciting day for our grade 8 graduates -- we are releasing our virtual graduation ceremony later this afternoon. We are so proud of our graduating students for their hard-work and their ability to be flexible during this unpredictable year. We wish them all of the best in high school!

Next week, on Wednesday, we will have a virtual whole-school, year-end assembly. This is a chance for everyone to say goodbye to some very special people who are leaving our school and to see our year-end slideshow. The assembly will be on Microsoft Teams and will begin at 10 am. Meeting Link

An Important Message from Ms. Witley

*this was sent out earlier to families but just in case you missed it, here it is again

Dear Selby Families,

I am writing to inform you of a change in administration that will be taking effect in September. For the 2021-2022 school year, I will be placed as the Principal at Bayridge Public School in Kingston.

While I always look forward to new beginnings, it is certainly difficult to accept that these are my final days at this school; especially after the very unpredictable last two years. Despite the uncertainty of the last two years, I have loved getting to know our students, staff and families. This school is truly a gem and I have been so grateful to come here every day. Selby will always hold a special place in my heart.

Retired Principal David Alison will be placed as the Principal at Selby in September and will be thrilled to welcome everyone back. Please take care of yourselves and reach out to us if you need us.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Kelly Witley

Graduation 2021

As per the Board and Public Health directives, we will not be having individual graduation ceremonies. We feel grateful that we will be able to do a hybrid celebration for our grade 8s. Specific details are unfolding but we will be releasing the virtual slideshow for the graduation on Friday, June 18 so families can make a night of it and celebrate their graduate. We are also inviting our graduates to the school for a quick photo op with 2 guests on Tuesday, June 22. This will require distancing and masking for all attendees. Mrs. Kemp has sent out information to our grade 8 families.

Final Farewell, Report Card Pick-up and Item Retrieval

We are hoping to be able to say goodbye to our Selby Stars in person, one last time before the summer. While we can't gather in large groups, we can do a drive-through pick-up, much like we did last year. Now, just with masks! Students will be invited by class (see schedule below). This is meant to be short and sweet so you can gather anything that was left behind in April, pick-up your child's report card, pick-up a yearbook, return devices and say goodbye to our staff. If you have more than one child, we will accommodate you - just come at one of your children's class times and we will have staff round-up the rest of your children's belongings.

We will be using the end, middle and main doors. Look for your child's teacher at the door closest to their classroom.

Pick-up Schedule for Wednesday, June 23:

12:00-12:30 Mrs. Taylor, Mr. Hill, Mrs. McCutcheon

12:30-1:00 Mr. Craig, Mr. Sunderland, Ms. Kemp

1:00-1:30 Ms. King, Mr. Spiers,

1:30-2:00 Mrs. Richards, Mrs. McDonald/Mrs. Wagar

*Families will need to wear masks and stay distanced at all times

*Families will need to complete the screener (below) before coming to the school -*school staff will verify verbally that you have pre-screened, when you arrive at the school

Device/Hot Spot Return

Please bring devices and hot spots back ASAP if you are no longer using them. If you are still using them, please return them by Wednesday, June 23 at the latest. We will clean them and prep them for use in September.

Yearbooks

We are so happy to share that every Selby family will get a yearbook this year. Thank you to Mrs. McCutcheon and her student helpers for putting the yearbook together and to Parent Council for paying for the yearbooks. It has been quite a year but there have been so many memorable moments that we will want to look back on in the years to come. Yearbooks will be ready for pick-up when you get your report cards and any personal belongings at the school on Wednesday, June 23.

Welcome to our new JK Students!

On Monday, June 14 we invite all of our new JK families to come to the school to drive up and meet our team. We have a little something for you and would love to give you a wave and a smile (from behind our masks) to welcome you to our school. This would also be a great time to bring any outstanding paperwork and documentation. Please come to the school between 9 and 10 on Monday morning, if you can. We can't wait to meet you!
