Together we are Better...Riders Lead the Way!
February 2024
Happy Winter! We hope you are all staying safe and warm during these cold months and enjoyed the recent first glimpses of snow for 2024!
We had a fun, and busy January filled with many exciting events. Congratulations to our WRB School Spelling Bee Champion Michael Becton, first runner up Evan Dickinson, and second runner up Sophia Bell. Thank you to everyone who came to our W. Reily Brown Riders Roll. We love seeing everyone having fun together on the rink! Also, congratulations to our 5th-grade band for their outstanding winter concert.
Our next family event will be Mystery Night, held on Thursday, February 22nd, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Families will enjoy fun riddles and puzzles and have a meal to take with them. We look forward to seeing everyone; it should be an evening full of suspense!
Please note that there is no school for a teacher in-service day on Monday, February 12th, 2024, or Monday, February 19th, 2024, in honor of Presidents' Day.

👩🎓 The Leader in Me Student Voice Column 👩🎓
Seek First to Understand and Then be Understood means to listen and then talk. One way you could practice this at home or school is when someone is talking, like your teachers or parents, let them finish talking and then you can talk. It also means to listen to other people's ideas and feelings.
Thank you to everyone who donated to the Code Purple the donations. They will help many people in our community. The Student Lighthouse Team will be starting Kindness Grams from February 5th to March 1st.

Notes from Nurse JoAnn Rogers
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month!
This month is a great time to review how to help your child keep a great smile. Cavities (also called caries or tooth decay) are when the tooth surface is damaged and holes form that can cause tooth pain, infection or loss of the tooth. Did you know that tooth decay is the most common chronic health condition in children? And, that children with poor oral health often miss more school and receive lower grades than children who don’t?
So, how do you protect your children’s teeth?
- Brush your child’s teeth twice a day and floss at night before bedtime. (older children can be reminded to brush and floss) *Dentists recommend brushing for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Encourage your child to eat lots of fruits and vegetables instead of candies and cookies.
- Offer water to drink at mealtimes instead of juice, soda or other sugary drinks.
- Schedule regular visits (at least twice a year) for your child with his or her dentist.
- Replace your child’s toothbrush every 3 to 4 months.

Reframing the Concept of Conflict...
Is conflict good or bad? Oftentimes we’ll ask our elementary school students this question and almost 100% of the time the answer is, it’s “bad." In reality, conflict is a normal part of life for both children and adults and does not have to be a negative experience. Each of us experiences, processes and perceives the world through our own unique set of eyes; therefore, disagreements, clashes of needs or wants and differing opinions are inevitable. Conflict is not in and of itself inherently “bad” but rather neutral. We know that conflict can be uncomfortable and difficult. However, in the end, conflict can be measured by how it is handled, our responses and behaviors when conflicts arise.
If conflict is inevitable and a normal part of life, how do we change our mindset and the mindset of our children surrounding everyday conflict? It starts with our perception! Remember, conflict does not have to be a negative experience. When conflict is perceived as an opportunity for growth, empathy, awareness, insight, understanding, and compromise (where appropriate) it can lead to strengthened relationships and positive outcomes. Here at W. Reily Brown we are focused on having a growth mindset and using effective communications, such as I-Statements. The more skilled our children become at handling and navigating conflicts, the more prepared they will be for all of life’s challenges in the future.
What does this mean for your elementary school students? First, normalize conflict (It happens to all of us), then try and look at it from a positive perspective (I can learn more about the other person and come up with a great solution that's a win/win for both of us) and then practice the steps to resolving conflicts in a peaceful way. Focus on solutions and provide them with the skills to “work things out” when those times arise. Learning to 1) stop and breathe, 2) share feelings in a kind and respectful way, 3) listen to each other and come up with solutions together, are critical to the process of working through conflict. Ultimately, it can create a more peaceful environment at school and home.
