Superintendent announces plans for final year in Anacortes
Superintendent Mark Wenzel recently announced plans to make 2019-2020 his final year in Anacortes. Wenzel plans to move to Singapore in summer 2020 to take a superintendent position at an international school.
In a communication to parents, Wenzel wrote:
"It was not an easy decision, as Anacortes offers such an amazing quality of life and community connectedness. At the same time, we saw it as an opportunity to take on a new adventure and share the world with our children.
The early notification gives the board time to develop a thoughtful superintendent search process. It also gives me time to savor a final year with our amazing staff and families, as we work together to help Anacortes students thrive."

District moves to “early-release” Wednesdays
Based on feedback from staff, students, and families, the district will switch to “early-release” Wednesdays rather than “late-start” Wednesdays starting with the 2019-20 school year. Overall feedback from recent surveys was positive (see compiled survey feedback here). Several of our community partners, including the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, and Fidalgo DanceWorks, said they could accommodate the extra time in their after-school programming.
The exact schedule will be worked out in the coming weeks, and available before the end of the school year. On these days, while staff are meeting in their Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), we will provide study areas or possible tutorial support for students until after-school athletics and activities can start at the middle and high school. We will also offer a supervised space for students to meet at the elementary schools.
Many students noted that they liked being able to sleep in on Wednesdays; with the shift to later school start times each day next year, we believe we can achieve a balance of more sleep for students and more collaboration time for our staff.
The 2019-20 school year starts on Thursday, Sept. 5. An updated calendar is posted on our website: http://www.asd103.org/for_students_and_families
