Comer Elementary's STAR News

March 6 - March 10, 2023

End of 3rd Quarter!

We will be finishing up the end of the 3rd quarter of the year this week (My, how the school year has flown!). Our teachers will be gathering data this week on how our students are doing, and preparing for the final quarter of instruction.

Our K-2nd grade students will complete end-of-quarter assessments for sight words, math facts, and phonics. Our 3rd to 5th grade students will take the MAP assessments again, and this data will help their teachers know what they need to review and re-teach as we gear up for Milestones assessments in April and May.

We are excited to see the progress our Comets are making, and we cannot wait to see how they shine this week! Also, remember that we have a TEACHER WORKDAY on MONDAY, MARCH 13TH! This is so that teachers can finalize grades and plan for the 4th quarter.

Let's Celebrate!

9th Annual Spirit Sprint--March 31st!

The Comer PTO is gearing up for the 9th Annual Spirit Sprint on March 31st! Spirit Sprint packets went home in Tuesday folders last week. This is PTO's biggest fundraiser, and the funds go almost exclusively to supporting the cost of field trips for each grade level. Additional funds are used for teacher appreciation events and for family engagement events, like family movie night.

Our Comets work as a TEAM in their homerooms to raise money for the Spirit Sprint. They can qualify for rewards from our PTO as a school, as homerooms, and as individuals. The rewards are listed below.

Annual Title I Input Survey

Because Comer Elementary is a Title I School (meaning we receive federal funds due to the population of students that we have receiving free or reduced lunch), we gather input from parents and families each year. This input helps us to improve our services to our students and families. Take a moment to complete the survey using the link below.

Georgia Parent Survey

Also, if you have not taken this survey yet, please take a moment to complete the Georgia Parent Survey for Comer Elementary! This is a state-wide survey where parents, students, and staff are asked to provide feedback on our school so that we can continuously improve our climate and culture!

Food2Kids!

Each month Comer Elementary collects food items for our Madison County Food2Kids program! This food stays in Madison County and is given to children in need. For the month of March it is Single-Serve Entrees. (Beef Ravioli)

Comer Cafeteria's "Angel Account"

We are blessed to have community members who would like to donate money to help students and struggling families pay off lunch account balances. Mrs. Gaddis, our cafeteria manager, puts donations into the "Angel Account" for times when our Comet families could use a little extra help. If you would like to donate funds for this cause, please reach out to Mrs. Gaddis by calling the school or emailing her at wgaddis@madison.k12.ga.us

Note from Nurse Ramsey

Please consider sending your child to school with a water bottle as the weather is getting warmer. It is helpful if you make sure the bottle is clearly labeled with your child’s name. The fountains are back open, but it usually takes more water than that to balance out recess, PE, and other outdoor activities. Thank you!

March Reminders

Here are some things you can do to help your child be ready to start each day!

  • Please make sure if your child has a jacket or hoodie that it is labeled with his/her name.
  • A good night's sleep helps your child be rested and ready to learn.
  • Be here no later than 7:50 A.M.
  • Make sure your child has their agenda with any notes about transportation changes.
  • Chromebooks need to be fully charged.
  • Whenever your child is absent, please send a note on a piece of paper or in their agenda. You may also send an email to our secretary, Donice Moss.
  • Parents are encouraged to send nutritious foods for snack breaks. Soft drinks and candy are not allowed, per our student handbook. Water only in water bottles (other drinks cause sticky spills).

BEYOND News

BEYOND Session 4 begins this week! The dates are March 7th - March 30th. If your child will be a car rider after BEYOND, please remember to request a car tag if you don't already have one. If your child is usually a car rider, then you can use the tag you already have in your car. If you don't have a tag, you will need to come in to sign your child out.
