100 Days of School!
Kindergarten celebrated the 100th day of school with lots of fun activities that involved the number 100. Students counted to 100, painted 100 dots, and made crowns with 100 stickers. Students also counted out 10 different snacks to make a snack of 100.
1st Grade
“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”
The first grade students have been focusing on acts of kindness. We have been working to do random acts of kindness for others within our school. Our students have learned how good our heart feels to do something kind to someone else.
We recently celebrated the 100th day of school! Our students and teachers dressed up like they were 100 years old! We also completed various fun 100th day activities...including, flipping a coin 100 times, rolling a dice and making 100 tallies, and painting 100 dots! What a fun day it was!
First Grade is going to travel the United States. We have been exploring different cities in the United States through GoNoodle Air Time, thanks to the generous contribution from Guthrie for the purchase of GoNoodle Plus! We are trying to collect post cards from each state to place on our map of the United States! Will you help us? Please send us a post card to:

100 Days!
2nd Grade
Our Super Second Graders have been learning about rivers and erosion with many interesting investigations and experiments! As Junior Scientists they are making observations, collecting data and forming conclusions about how the Earth changes and what causes those changes.
In Math, we are continuing to improve our addition and subtraction skills by practicing with two and three digit numbers. We are also working with money and time as we apply these skills to our lives.
In Language Arts, we are learning how to read and write non-fiction text. We are learning about diagrams, maps, charts, subtitles, headings, and many other non-fiction text features. We are researching and writing about what we know.
In Social Studies, we are learning about Civil Rights, Martin Luther King Jr. and famous black Americans for Black History Month. And, as always, we are learning to show kindness.
3rd Grade
Third grade would like to thank all who donates to the SOUPer Bowl party. It was a huge success. Besides enjoying a delicious bowl of soup, we collected over 50 cans of soup to be donated to the Mansfield Food Pantry. Thanks for all you do!
4th Grade
The students in 4th grade have been busy building circuits and learning about electricity. They built switches and then used them to test materials to determine if they were conductors or insulators. Their latest activity was to build virtual circuits on the laptops. Nearly every student prefered building the circuits with the real materials to building them on the computer.
5th Grade
Winter is in full blast and fifth graders have been very busy researching the polar regions. During writing workshop, writers have conducted research based on their interests, learned how to take effective notes, cited evidence, and determined what research was important. Next, writers took this research and drafted informational essays complete with introductions, subtopic headings, and conclusions. Now writers are busy publishing their research essays in the form of pamphlets, books, posters, and newspapers. Stop by the 5th grade hallway soon to see their “chilly” projects! “BRRRR!”
6th Grade
The sixth graders are attempting to grow a tree for every child in out school. The planted seeds for American Chestnut, Chinese Chestnut, White Pine, Hemlock, apple, pear, and cherry.
The apples were the first to sprout, with almost 100% of the seeds germinating.
The sixth graders are waging a “Battle Royale”. The have designed and built robots for a battle bot competition, and intensities are high!
Guidance
The 4th grade students have been working on the topic of "Respect". Each student chose a person in his/her life who shows others unconditional and true respect. We call these people our heroes or heroines.
The 4th grade students wrote about a specific person in their lives that they call their HERO. The essays are hung up in the hallways of W L Miller Elementary School. Take some time to find out who our local heroes and heroines are by stopping to read a few of these wonderful essays.
Title I
Wordplay
Use these activities to help your child hear sounds in words.
Choose a 3 letter word, such as pig. Have your child substitute different beginning sounds to make up new words. (big, dig, fig, rig, wig - silly words such as mig or vig, count, too!)
Ask your child to say a word without saying the first sound. Example: “Can you say cup without the /c/ sound?” (Answer: up)
