Pi Day
I would like to fill you in about the Math Club's activities for Pi Day, on Wednesday the 14th! (3/14)
Your level of involvement in your classroom is entirely up to you. I will be sending an email on Tuesday with several links that you can share with students.
- Each hour you can go to a link to watch a short video with math club students sharing some cool facts about Pi.
- There will be another link (for each hour) to a Google Form that has a question about Pi (or pie). The first two responses submitted will get a prize of small pies, candies, or other treats. Staff and students may participate!
- Prizes for the Google for Pie contest will be available in my classroom (107), right after school that day.
- Encourage your students to get involved, however you can!
Also, Math Club students will be hosting a Bake Sale! It will be stationed in the hall between the cafeteria and gym. Sales are before school starting at 7:15, and during lunch periods.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your support!
March 14th
Anyway, with that being said, we met with the Supt.'s Advisory today to get our finger on the pulse of our students at HPHS. They did not plan to walk out and stated although it's on social media, kids here aren't really talking about it. A few who are more socially aware stated they planned to do something on April 20th instead and asked if we'd be willing to help with this initiative. So, we will be protecting time for the Supt.'s Advisory along with those they recruit to create an event. We will simply provide support and let them run with it. Students not only want to be able to know their "Why" but also be able to articulate it and share with others, educate others, and stand for something.
So about Wednesday...there are two students on Supt's Advisory who are also part of the radio station, and at 10:00am, they would like to read the names of the victims of the February 14th tragedy in Parkland, Florida.
If there are students who choose to walk out at HP, we will not impede their right to protest, but will expect them to return to class.
Yondr Phone Cases
Yondr does not want the pouches to be used in a disciplinary way with a "consequence" for having the phone. If you need assistance with implementation, please contact one of the administrators to assist. If you have pouches and only expect students to put the phones in the case after the student has taken it out, then it is being used as a consequence and that is not the proper implementation. We can make ourselves available to speak to classes. If you do not want to continue implementation of the pouches in your classroom, please let us know.
If we use the cases inappropriately, we will not receive our second shipment to start the 2018-2019 school year from Yondr.
We have a couple more class sets for those interested in implementing as a pilot.
HPHS Site Goals 2018
By the end of the 2017-2018 school year, each student will demonstrate growth on the state assessment resulting in a school-wide increase of ten percent growth. Math proficiency will be at or above twenty percent.
By the end of the 2017-2018 school year, each student will demonstrate growth on the state assessment resulting in a school-wide increase of ten percent growth. Reading proficiency will be at or above twenty-four percent.
The overall attendance rate for Highland Park will reach ninety-two percent for the 2017-2018 school year by reducing chronic attendance issues by fifty percent.
As Administrators, Mr. Ackerman, Ms. Johnston, Ms. Watson, and myself (Mrs. Perry), we have added the following goals as the Instructional Leaders at HPHS as our commitment to our students, families, and stakeholders. These goals will not be reached overnight, and we can't do it without the assistance and support of the faculty and staff at HP, the district office and BOE Members, community, families, and especially our students who must put forth a real effort each day:
- Increase the 2017-2018 Graduation Rate based on the current students enrolled to 93% of the 11R's and Seniors and those who finish will be going to college, vocational school, the military, or secured full-time employment.
- Increase school-wide communication with a weekly staff newsletter, monthly newsletter to parents and community, updated marquee, high traffic on Facebook, and visibility in the building and at school and community activities.
- Inspect what we expect and increase teaching and learning with teachers submitting weekly lesson plans, posting power standards, evidence of Building Academic Vocabulary, increased usage of Webb's DOK Questions, common formative assessments, and bell-to-bell teaching.
- It is our goal to help make Highland Park a school we would gladly send our own children to while creating high expectations, producing results, increasing rigor in the classroom, and creating a school culture worth bragging about; where students are safe, challenged, and ready. We (Administrators, Faculty & Staff) will build ladders for students while keeping the standards and expectations high!
