Message from the Principal
The start of a school year is always such an exciting time. Welcome back to all of our students and families returning to Woodlawn. Also a big welcome to all of our new students and families. I look forward to meeting you all. I would also like to welcome some new staff to Woodlawn - Ms. Rachael Neal, Mrs. Heather Penner, Ms. Jordyn Shaw, and Ms. Amanda Bilevicius.
It takes a lot of work to get a school ready for the start of the year. A big thank you to Don McCracken and his summer cleaning staff for making our school look great! Another big thank you to Cheryl Braun and Lynn Giesbrecht in the office for the hard work they do behind the scenes making sure everything is in order. Thank you to the teachers who have been working hard getting their classrooms ready for their students.
It is said that culture is what we value most. Our school culture includes the mission to CARE, CONNECT, and CONTRIBUTE. In the coming months your children will learn the meaning of these concepts and how important they are to living a good life.
The safety and education of your children is a privilege I and the entire staff take seriously. I want to thank you for partnering with us during your child's learning journey.

Message from the Vice Principal
The start of the school year is a good time to think about who we are and what kind of person we want to be. At Woodlawn we use the language of "Bucket Filling" and "Being Bucket Fillers" to help our students learn how they can Care, Connect, and Contribute. We look for learning and social behaviours that demonstrate these important skills and hand out Bucket Filling Slips to let our students know we notice and value these skills and help them notice too. Caring, connecting, and contributing can be something that we do or share with others. We also want our students to know that it is important for them to care about themselves, to connect with their environment and their learning, and to make a contribution to their world, both at the community level as well as the global level. When they receive a Bucket Filling Slip, part of the slip will go into a bucket outside of the principals' offices and the other half will go home for the student to share with his/her family. Names will be pulled each day and students will receive a small prize. Once a week the students who have had their names pulled will get to come to Makerspace Monday at lunch with Mrs. Fraser and myself. Once every six weeks or so, Mrs. Fraser and I will take the students who have had their names pulled on a special trip somewhere in the community. We are still deciding where our "Bucket trips" will be this year so stay tuned!
When your child comes home with a Bucket Filling slip, please take some time to talk to him/her about what he/she was doing to be caring, connecting, or contributing.

Parent Portal/Student Information
The HSD Parent Portal is a communications tool designed to enhance and increase parent/guardian involvement in the education of their children by providing secure online access to their child's student information. With a single username and password you can access data for each of your children attending an HSD school. The Access IDs along with setup instructions have been sent via email to all eligible parents/guardians of new students. If you are new to Woodlawn and did not receive the specified email, please contact the school office at 204-326-6110.
Please take a few minutes to review the student information and contact information for your child. It is important that the school has current address and contact information for your child in case it is necessary to reach someone during the school day. Changes can be made through the parent portal.
Information verification forms will be mailed to parents/guardians that do have not an email address on file at the school. If you receive a form through the mail, please make any necessary changes on the form, sign and return the form to the school office.

Please take the time to read the Student Handbook that is included in your child’s agenda. The handbook can be a valuable reference tool during the school year for many questions that students or parents have.

If you are picking up your child during the school day or dropping something off (labelled with name and homeroom) for your child you must report to the office. If it is necessary to pick your child up for an appointment please do so at the office before or after break times. It is difficult for recess supervisors to find students on the playground.

School safety reminders
Parking/Pick Up/Drop off
School arrival/leaving times
Walking students and those dropped off by parents should arrive at school after 8:30 in the morning. Teacher supervision is provided starting at 8:30. Any students arriving on the playground before 8:30 will not be supervised and responsibility for the student belongs with the parent/guardian. Students are permitted to enter the building when the 8:53 bell rings.
Students are required to leave for home by 4:00 in the afternoon unless prior arrangements have been made. Please arrange a pick up location that is outside and near an entrance to the school (except the bus loop entrance) if you are picking up your child at the end of the day. This will help reduce the crowding in the halls by the classroom doors and at the front office at dismissal time (3:45). Make every effort to be punctual when picking up your children. Please ensure your child is aware of pickup arrangements before coming to school. Changes to routine pick up arrangements should be written in the agenda book. If a friend or relative is picking up a child from school the parent/guardian needs to notify the school or the classroom teacher by writing a note in the agenda. If you need to phone the school regarding a change in pick up for your child at the end of the day please call before 2:45 pm.

Pizza is $2.00 per slice. Students place their order with their teacher first thing Wednesday mornings. For your convenience we have tickets available that are sold in sheets of 10 for $20.00. Tickets can be purchased from the school office.
Milk sales begin on Monday, September 10th. White or chocolate milk is available for purchase at lunch time for .75 each.
Friday Hot Lunch - Starting September 21st
This lunch service is organized by the Parent Advisory Council. This year Friday hot lunch will be supplied by Main Bread and Butter. The choices each week include: soup and a bun; a turkey wrap; and a pasta option. The price for each item is $3.25. For your convenience, the PAC has hot lunch tickets available for parents to purchase. These tickets are available at the office.
Stars of the Future
Stars of the Future is offered FREE to families living in the South East region through a partnership with Southern Health-Santé Sud, South East Children’s Therapy Initiative and Healthy Child Coalition – South East.
Children born between January 1 and June 30, 2015, together with their parents, are invited to attend the Fall 2018 Stars of the Future clinic. Stars of the Future is a FREE screening program for children that live in South East Manitoba. It is a onetime appointment, designed to find out how your child is doing in the areas of speech & language, hearing, growth and development. The appointment is one hour long. Appointments may be booked by calling 204-346-6136 and leaving a message. For more information on Stars of the Future go to www.healthychildcoalition.ca. Appointment times do fill up quickly, so we encourage you to book your appointment early.

administering medication to students at school
In the past there has been some confusion regarding the administering of medication while your child is under the care of the school. In accordance with Hanover School Policy, we feel you should be aware of the following points if your child requires the use of prescribed medication:
· All medication must be brought to school by the child’s guardian to ensure that the medication administered to your child is the correct medication. All Medications must be brought in the original pharmacy container.
· All medication administered at school will require forms completed by the parent which are available at the school office. If medication is required for more than fourteen days, an Individual Health Care Plan may be required.
· The school will not administer non-prescribed medication or over-the-counter medication. A doctor’s prescription is always required.
Even if your child is capable of taking their prescribed medication independently at school, it will still require the appropriate paperwork. The medication will be kept under lock and key. Students are not allowed to keep any type of medication in their locker, lunch kit, or backpack while on school premises.

WOODLAWN SCHOOL IS A "PEANUT AWARE SCHOOL"
No child without
Our school is involved with the Canadian Medic Alert Foundation’s
No Child Without program. There is no cost for students who attend our school and are between the ages of 4 up to their 14th birthday to join the Medic Alert through this program. If your child has a medical condition, allergy or is required to take medication on a regular basis, then you should consider this program. A child’s MedicAlert identification can alert school staff, friends, coaches and other’s about your child’s medical condition should an emergency occur.

www.nochild without.ca. To register your child you will need a NO Child Without brochure from the school office.
If your child is already part of the No Child Without program and there has been a change to their medical condition, medications or emergency contact information, call MedicAlert at 1-866-679-3220 Ext 1 to update your child’s file.

Hanover Parent & Child Community Program
Attention: Woodlawn Parents/Guardians:
Woodlawn School and The Hanover Parent and Child Community Program would like to invite you to bring your English or German speaking preschool children to attend a weekly parent and child program offered in English and German. Come with your children to have fun, learn, play, create and sing. This program is free and provides a snack. No registration is needed, just drop in when you can.
Children enjoy playing with and learning from other children. It is important for children to be exposed to playing with other children so they learn how to share, participate in cooperative play and express themselves. Children will have the opportunity to play with a variety of toys, sing, complete crafts and learn new games.
This program is being provided for preschool children to promote the development of school readiness skills.

Drive away hunger
In recognition of World Food Day, our school has decided to participate in the Farm Credit Canada Drive Away Hunger program and will be collecting donations of food for people who are hungry in our area.
By participating in this program, Farm Credit Canada will include our school in a random draw for a $500 donation to be used to make improvements at the winning school.
We would like you to send a food item to school with your child during October to support this program. All food items will be picked up and brought to South East Helping Hands. Watch for more information.

Strong Connections Program at Woodlawn For Grades 1-4
Please sign into your child's Parent Portal to see which date your grade 1-4 student will attend for Strong Connections. A note will also be sent home shortly with students.

September 14 and 17, 2018!
Strong Connections will take place once again at Woodlawn School. This program has been implemented for several years now in Hanover School Division. Strong Connections is a program designed to build the relationships between teachers and their students as well as enhance the beginning of the year assessment of each child. Strong Connections activities are designed to help us get to know our students and how they learn in order to know where to begin with instruction. This provides an opportunity for teachers to extend and
consolidate their understanding of each child through one to one interview/assessment times. This will facilitate teachers in planning for instruction that will effectively address learning needs early in the year.
What will teachers learn through Strong Connections?
Teachers working individually with their students in an atmosphere of support and
encouragement have an opportunity to collect first hand information about such things as:
· How they learn
· Their confidence as learners
· The learning strategies they possess
· Their reading, writing and mathematical skills
· Their approach to problem solving
· Their attitudes toward school and learning
· Their ability to reflect upon and set goals for their learning
How will it work?
On either September 14th or 17th , 2018, students will attend school one day out of two. With half of the students present, homeroom teachers will have the opportunity to meet one on one with each student to participate in relationship building activities and assessment which revolves around literacy and numeracy. This is an opportunity for teachers to gather information about each child’s learning that may not be evident during whole class instruction. It is also an opportunity to further develop the teacher-student relationship. While some students are with the teacher, others will be participating in a variety of stations which include music, physical education, literacy, technology, art, and character building.
During these days, there will be no regularly scheduled classes for students. Students will arrive at school in their normal manner (bus or other) for their scheduled day. Parents will be notified during the first week of school as to when their child’s scheduled Strong Connections day will be.
We look forward to using these days to provide us with a deeper understanding of each student. More information will be sent out in September including which day your child is scheduled to attend.
Starke Anschlüsse Programm wird fortgeführt in Woodlawn
am 14. und 17. September 2018!
Starke Anschlüsse werden wieder in der Woodlawn Schule stattfinden. Dieses Programm wird seit mehreren Jahren in der Hanover School Abteilung durchgeführt.
Starke Anschlüsse ist ein Programm, das entworfen ist, um die Einschätzung jedes Schülers am Anfang des Jahres zu erhöhen. Die Aktivitäten der Starken Anschlüsse sind keine Tests, aber eher Aufgaben die uns helfen unsere Schüler und wie sie lernen durch persönliche Gespräche und Aufgaben kennenzulernen, um die Planung des Unterrichts erleichtern und die einzigartigen Lernbedürfnisse schon am Anfang des Schuljahres adressieren zu können.
Was lernen die Lehrer durch Starke Anschlüsse?
Die Lehrer, die einzeln mit ihren Schülern in einer Atmosphäre der Unterstützung und der
Ermutigung arbeiten, haben eine Gelegenheit, aus erster Hand bezogene Informationen über
solche Sachen zu sammeln wie:
Wie sie lernen Ihr Selbstvertrauen als Lernende
Lernstrategien, die sie beherrschen
Lesen, Schreiben und mathematische Fähigkeiten
Herangehen an die Problemlösung
Haltung gegenüber der Schule und zum Lernen
Fähigkeit nachzudenken und Zielsetzung für ihr Lernen
Wie wird es ablaufen?
Den Schülern wird entweder der 14. oder der 17. September zugewiesen, an dem sie zur Schule kommen müssen.
Mit der Hälfte der anwesenden Schüler werden Klassenlehrer die Gelegenheit haben sich mit jedem Schüler zu treffen, um
an den Einschätzungtätigkeiten in den Sprachkünsten und Mathematik teilzunehmen. Dieses ist eine Gelegenheit für die
Lehrer Informationen über das Lernen jedes Kindes zu sammeln, die Möglicherweise während des Ganzklassenunterrichtes
nicht offensichtlich sein würden. Es ist auch eine Gelegenheit, das Lehrer-Schüler-Verhältnis zu erweitern. Während manche
Schüler mit den Lehrern arbeiten, werden andere an verschiedenen Tätigkeiten teilnehmen, so wie Musik, Sportunterricht,
Lesen, Kunst und Charakter Bildung.
An den Tagen des Programms wird es keine regelmässig geplanten Stunden geben. Die Schüler werden wie üblich, mit dem Bus oder anders, an ihrem zugewiesenen Tag zur Schule kommen. Die Eltern werden während der ersten Woche der Schule benachrichtigt wann der Starke Anschluss Tag Ihres Kindes sein wird.
Wir freuen uns schon diese Tage ausnutzen zu können, da sie uns eine bessere Gelegenheit bieten um die Schüler besser zu verstehen. Mehr informationen sowie den genauen Tag an dem ihr Kind kommen muss, wird im September raus geschickt.
RELIGIOUS EXERCISES & RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION
Notice of Approved Petitions for Woodlawn School
Petition for Religious Exercises - The Hanover School Division Board of Trustees has received a petition requesting that religious exercises be held in Woodlawn School during the 2018-2019 school year. The petitioners have specified their desire for the recitation of the Lord's Prayer and the reading of a Bible passage or story from the Bible. As the petition bears the signatures of parents/guardians representing more than 60 students in the school, the Board of Trustees of the Hanover School Division has authorized religious exercises, as specified above, to be held before the official instructional day from 9:00 a.m. to 9:05 a.m., in a designated common area of the school.
Petition for Religious Instruction - The Hanover School Division Board of Trustees has received a petition requesting that religious instruction be held in Woodlawn School during the 2018-2019 school year. The petitioners have specified their desire for the Discovery Time program offered by Child Evangelism Fellowship. As the petition bears the signatures of parents/guardians representing more than 25 students in the school, the Board of Trustees of the Hanover School Division has passed the required by-law permitting religious instruction, as specified above, to be offered by volunteers during designated half-hour per week classes.
Parents/guardians who did not sign the original petitions are eligible to join at any time by submitting a signed note to the HSD Board of Trustees (forward directly to Woodlawn School). The note must indicate the name and grade of student for whom permission to participate is being given. Only children whose parents/guardians signed the original petition, or have subsequently joined, may participate in the exercises and instruction as described above.
As a Manitoba public school division, HSD is obligated to comply with the provisions of The Public Schools Act and provincial guidelines governing the implementation of religious exercises and religious instruction. The Public Schools Act states that public schools must be non-sectarian. Religious exercises and religious instruction in public schools may only be implemented by school boards in a manner consistent with the Public Schools Act and provincial guidelines - after parent/guardian petition is presented to the school board. Such petitions require annual submission, and must be received by the HSD Board of Trustees no later than April 30 (previous to the school year for which the petition applies).
