Next Generation MCAS News
Glenwood teachers foster a learning environment where children are empowered and inspired to be academically curious, innovative, critical thinkers, and demonstrate perseverance. These are all traits that will assist your children in elementary school and well into their future careers. These are also skills that will assist our students in taking the Next Generation MCAS test this spring.
According to DESE the Next Generation MCAS is designed to be given on a computer and is focused on:
· Students demonstrating their critical thinking abilities
· Students applying their knowledge to new situations
· Students making connections between reading and writing
· Students defending a point of view by using multiple resources
Scores on this year's MCAS will be different. DESE advises that the Spring 2017 is a baseline year for this new test (grades 3-8), and these scores should not be compared to previous years’ scores.
· The next-generation MCAS uses a scale of 440 to 560 and should not be directly compared to the MCAS, which used a scale of 200-280.
· However, in general, the standards for “Meeting Expectations” on the new test are more rigorous than the standards for reaching “Proficient” on the old MCAS. Students who were proficient on the Legacy MCAS may now “Partially Meet the Standards” on the Next Generation MCAS, which is a new test with a different approach to assessing student performance in grades 3-8.
· Students in grades 3-8 do not face any negative consequences as a result of their scores.
· Under the legacy MCAS, many students would pass MCAS only to arrive at college and find they needed remedial courses. The next-generation MCAS is designed to indicate where students are academically while there is still time to get them back on track.
Next Generation achievement levels are:
Exceeding Expectations
A student who performed at this level exceeded grade-level expectations by demonstrating mastery of the subject matter.
Meeting Expectations
A student who performed at this level met grade-level expectations and is academically on track to succeed in the current grade in this subject.
Partially Meeting Expectations
A student who performed at this level partially met grade-level expectations in this subject.
Not Meeting Expectations
A student who performed at this level did not meet grade-level expectations in this subject.

Kindness Challenge/Rutland Food Pantry
Last year, students donated shoes to children in Africa. This year we put our efforts to a local organization. Our challenge this year was to provide a Thanksgiving dinner to as many Rutland families as possible. Students brought in over 1000 nonperishable items for the Rutland Food pantry. The winners of the extra recess were Mrs. Paulson's class with 199 items and Mrs. Grillo's class with 162 items.
Thank you for helping us to achieve our goal.

Tangy Tuesday
Mr. Vickstrom introduced Glenwood teachers to Tangy Tuesday puzzles. "Tangy Tuesday" puzzles give students the opportunity to practice and improve their skills in a thoughtful and systematic way. By the end of the year, kids who solve all 5 of Greg Tang's puzzles every week will have done thousands of problems designed to help them become better in math.
The ultimate goal of Tangy Tuesday puzzles is for kids to enjoy solving problems – especially challenging ones. Students who solve these puzzles will struggle, learn to persevere, and ultimately become better, more creative thinkers. Through their own hard work, they will become smarter more successful students. Students in Ms. Lee's class were working on these puzzles this week.

Notes from Mrs. Lawton, School Nurse
Health Update 10/20/2017:
I hope you are all enjoying this great fall weather lately. With the Winter season around the corner and the need to wear hats, I wanted to remind Parents and Guardians to remind their children that they should not be sharing hats/visors with other children, and also they should not be sharing hair implements. You should be checking your child’s hair on a continuous basis.
If you discover head lice in your child's hair, do not send them to school. You should notify the health office and you will need to notify your MD and they will need to be properly treated before coming back to school. When they do return to school, they need to be checked here in the health office before they return to class.
I have recently finished with all the results of the Vision and Hearing screenings. I have sent home letters for those students that will need further follow-up with their MD’s. If you could return those letters to me when the follow-up is done, that would be great!
Thank you to all those that have sent in recent copies of their children’s MD physicals and updated immunizations- I appreciate it. For those of you who haven’t been able to yet- if you could send them along as soon as possible, that would be great!
- When we receive a note from a doctor letting us know a child can not participate in gym class, we have to follow the doctor's orders. Therefore, a students cannot return to gym without updated orders that clear them for participation. Please make sure there is a start and end date, if possible, on doctor's orders.

- Please ensure your CORI has not expired. Contact Mrs. O’Coin if you are unsure of your expiration date. Mrs. O’Coin has current information regarding the CORI. We cannot rush CORI checks at the end of the year as systems are overloaded.
