Scott 6th Grade Center's Motto- "We Enter to Learn and Leave to Achieve"
What Has Been Happening in Mrs. Waterman's Classes?
In Social Studies classes with Mrs. Waterman, students began the year learning geography. The children learned map skills as well as the various types of maps and their uses. They showcased their skills by creating a map of their fantasy country with specific criteria that displayed knowledge of their learning.
The study of ancient history began with early man, hunter-gatherers, and Mesopotamia. Students created trading cards of the early humans and dioramas of the hunter-gatherers, showcasing the life of humans at this time. Mesopotamia, being the location of the first civilization, shows students the genius ways humans began agricultural societies with the first cities and the beginning of writing, social classes, religion, and laws.
Students are being taken back in time by learning about the influences of our early cultures. Students will become scribes and practice the first language of cuneiform by creating their own clay tablet. Students will continue the human timeline by learning about the ancient world, exploring Egypt, Greece, Rome, and China.
In Science, we explored the branches of Earth Science, showing a preview for the year. We will investigate the beauty of our planet, including minerals and rocks, landforms, meteorology, oceanography, inland waters, and astronomy. Currently we are learning about rocks and minerals. Students are working on a web quest of the rock cycle which teaches the students how the different types of rocks are formed and transformed. We will be exploring further by conducting a lab with crayon chips to show the formation of the various types and another lab to test and categorize various rocks.
Congratulations to Our Scott Robotics Club
