January 2023
Burnside Elementary
Welcome Back and Happy Winter
As we ring in the New Year, it is a time to reflect on our accomplishments and review goals for what we have left to do in the school year. Soon, we will be taking our mid year Fastbridge Assessments to see how much progress we have made since the start of the year.
We have many exciting opportunities in the comming weeks and months. We will have a PBIS Expectations Tour on January 3, The second grade will head to the Children's Theater on January 5th, and the Missoula Children's Theater will be joining us in the building on January 6th. We are moving full steam ahead for the last half of this year.
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank those teachers, students, and families that came together to donate over 1400 items (over 1000 pounds) to the food shelf with our food drive. An extra special shout out to Mr. Lahammer's and Mr. Albers' classes for helping to count and organize all of the donations. Our theme this year has been "Change Sings," and our Burnside community has certainly shown how to be the change we wish to see!
Take good care,
Jennifer Grove

Recess & January
Just a reminder that students go outside until "feels like" temperature reaches 0 degrees. Please make sure your child has their cold weather gear. We do have some extra gloves and hats, but many children use it each day.
National Winter Walk to School Day
The annual Winter Walk to School or Your Bus Stop Day is coming up on February 1st!
Walking to school allows for a little bit of exercise before starting the day and improves children’s learning. Encourage your child to walk to school or their bus stop with a friend on February 1st.
Flexible Learning Days ***SNOW DAYS***
A Flexible Learning Day means a school day where RWPS will offer access to online instruction or prepared activities provided by students’ teachers during inclement weather. Flexible Learning Days won’t replace the face-to-face time students have with their teachers but it can provide better continuity when school is interrupted. There are a maximum of five flexible learning days per school year.
For our students at Burnside, students have been provided a packet of choice work to be completed within a week of the called snow day. That work can also be accessed here: https://redwing.k12.mn.us/page/9825
Fastbridge Testing January 9-13, 2023
FastBridge is a set of reading and math assessments that teachers use to measure student learning. FastBridge scores help teachers to know what kind of teaching each student needs to help them grow, both individually and as part of the whole class.
We also take the FastBridge SAEBRS, which is a screener that helps us identify students who might be at risk for social, academic, and emotional behaviors. We know that all play a part in academic achievement.
