Perspective on College Admission
Colleges have many priorities, overt and hidden, that inform their admission decisions. Acceptances are not always about just GPA, test scores, and extracurricular activities. Colleges might be seeking students from different geographic areas, for example; sometimes the band desperately needs tuba players; and in some instances schools are seeking students committed to a certain major in order to keep that program afloat. All this to say that the decisions you receive can be more about a match/mismatch between your profile and what colleges happen to need. Grieve the outcome that was not what you hoped for, and then return your focus to the opportunities that await.
We at Crosby Scholars already know that your work ethic, focus, compassion, intelligence, and determination will get you where you want to go in life, independent of where you pursue post-secondary education. We are proud of all of you and look forward to our continued partnership.
Piedmont Opera/Cultural Awareness Scholarship
Wednesday, March 18, and Tuesday, March 24, are student nights at The King and I, presented by Piedmont Opera and Hanesbrands, Inc. The production will be held at The Stevens Center of UNCSA at 405 West Fourth Street. The cost is $5 for students and $15 for an accompanying parent/guardian.
Tickets must be reserved by March 16 at 4:00 p.m.
To reserve tickets, call the Opera box office at (336) 725-7101
**A drawing will be held for two $250.00 scholarships awarded to a junior or senior Crosby Scholars student who attends the performance. This scholarship must be applied toward the winner’s college education, and the recipient must complete the Crosby Scholars Program.
Celebrating Our Seniors
Each spring the Crosby Scholars Program celebrates its seniors by hosting a Senior Gala. This year’s event will be held April 30 at the Benton Convention Center. Invitations will be mailed at the beginning of April, and seniors are welcome to bring two guests. Check your Crosby Scholars Student Portal for details. We look forward to this special evening with you!
The Choice Is Yours
Confirming your college enrollment plan is a big decision. Carefully evaluate all offers of admission, and talk with those who know you best and who have accompanied you on this journey. Typically you have time to visit campus again after being offered admission and before the enrollment deposit is due (May 1). Compare financial aid awards, and call colleges with questions if there is anything you don't understand.
Please make sure to notify any college(s) that accepted you that you will not be attending. It is important to respect the admission process from the school's perspective, too, and the place reserved for you can be offered to another applicant.
The College I Will Attend Is . . . .
Many of you have received college acceptances and have decided where you will matriculate. Please update your Crosby Scholars Student Portal with your college name after you make your final decision. Follow the steps below.
- Log into your Crosby Scholars Student Portal
- Click the Profile tab
- Click Edit This Info above the personal info box
- Scroll to the bottom of the page. The last line will be a drop down box for College Name where the student can select the school.
- Once the field is populated, click the Update button to save changes.
- If the college name is not listed, please email seniorprogram@crosbyscholars.org or text 336-777-7648 with your name, high school, and name of the college/university, and we will add it to the list.
A few notes:
- Seniors cannot see the College Name selection until they click Edit this Info; once the field is populated, it will show on the Profile page.
- Schools are listed by their official name, not abbreviations or nicknames.
- There are options for military branches and gap year for students who do not plan to enroll in a 2-or-4-year school right away.
Accepted? Enrollment Decision Made? What’s Next?
You’ve been accepted and decided which college to attend, but there is still a lot to do. Don’t forget these important tasks:
- Contact the Financial Aid office at your intended school if you have questions about your financial aid package
- Send deposit to school before the May 1 deadline
- Register for orientation
- Sign up for housing and select (or be assigned) a roommate
Roommate Roulette
If you choose to be randomly matched with a roommate, you must be completely forthright in assessing your habits, needs, and preferences. Consider a few things about yourself as well as a potential roommate:
- study habits
- sleep patterns
- sociability
- sloppy or neat
- philosophy on using roommates possessions with or without permission
The college will ask you to complete a questionnaire addressing the above and many other characteristics that might influence compatibility in order to make the strongest match possible between people.
Change--Friend or Foe?
- Admit that you feel a little lost, and talk with someone you trust
- Remember other times you coped with change; be confident that you are able to do so again
- Focus on the positive aspects of change, including new possibilities in your life that otherwise might not occur
- Allow yourself time to adjust, and don't condemn yourself if it takes longer than expected
- Take care of your physical, mental, and emotional health; it is doubly difficult to navigate new life circumstances when not practicing self-care
Change--friend or foe? We say friend!!
