Creating Opportunities Together

A Thought or Two from Mr. Nieslanik

It is February. Let that sink in for a bit. February. It just seems like yesterday we returned from Winter Break and school resumed. There were days that were unbelievingly long and at the same time, the weeks just flew by. I raise this thought because before we know it we will be celebrating the Senior Class on June 11 at their Graduation, falling into Spring Opportunity Week, and preparing for Summer Break. I kid you not, the spring months just fly by. With this said, we need to pull ourselves back to the here and now. The daily grind of school is very important. Attendance, work completion, and class participation build life-long skills. Working through uncomfortable and complex work builds problem-solving skills. Interacting with people from different walks of life builds empathy. If a student chooses to be present only partially, then the importance of school is lost, the connections to the community are broken, and the drive to excel academically is replaced by complacency. Let's all work together to make this Second Semester the best it can be, and as always, I thank you for your continued partnership.

The Oregon Promise Grant

The verification process for the Oregon Promise Grant has changed a little bit this year potentially allowing students below the 2.5 GPA requirement to be awarded the grant as well. Any senior planning on attending any Oregon community college next year is strongly encouraged to apply. Visit OSAC to start the application. Families completing the Oregon Promise application will need to also complete the FAFSA or ORSAA. If you have any questions, please email your students counselor.

FAFSA Information

Now is the time to complete your FAFSA if you have not already done so. FAFSA can provide additional money for a community college, trade school or university. Students without a social security number can also apply for additional money using ORSAA. Visit OSAC to help determine which one to complete. All students who complete their FAFSA or ORSAA in February will receive a gift card to a local business too ! We will be providing 'help' sessions for students to work on their FAFSA or ORSAA in the coming weeks and we will have a parent 'help' event the evening of Feb. 15. More information to follow. If you have any questions, please email your students counselor.
