For what reasons, and with what success, did the United States adopt a policy of containment between 1947-1962?
"The Buildup" Prior Tensions ..
There were ultimately two major things that led to the beginning fears of containment:
- Failure of The Baruch Plan - This was an attempt to remove Soviet fear of nuclear weapons but the U.S. insisted the right to make and have nuclear weapons for a certain period of time
- "Long Telegram" - This telegram argued that security fear, internal politics, and leadership made the USSR dangerous and they would never cooperate
A speech was given to congress by Truman in 1947 to show how there was a serious struggle between democracy and communism
