Letter from the Principal
Greetings Black Bear Families,
I hope this message finds you all well. 2021 seems to have picked up right where 2020 left off, but with hope still alive for what this year can still bring. I know that there are many questions for what to expect with new uncertainty of a vaccine being available, and the hopes of bringing groups of students back to school. There will be updates coming out to families weekly as information is available. Any adjustments to hybrid learning from what was shared during the fall will be made clear in time for all families to make the best decisions for themselves. We share the feelings that have come with so much uncertainty since last March, and that this has been a challenging period of time for everyone. We understand this as educators, parents and community members. On the positive side, we know we will be a stronger school community because of our partnership through all of this. In the meantime, please call me through our school office for any needs. We continue to stand ready to help serve and support all our students and families while we move toward any potential next steps.
With Gratitude,
Mr. Kingery
To the Tualatin Elementary School Community
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Evie Andrews passed away peacefully in her sleep this past weekend.
Many of you know that Evie was a beloved person within the Tualatin Elementary community. She started her teaching career at Tualatin Elementary in 1966. She taught 1st grade for over 30 years. She accomplished a great deal during her time as a teacher. In 1984, Evie won the Oregon Teacher of the Year Award. She has also been honored with the Krista McAuliffe Award in 1987. This award recognized her achievements for presenting invention workshops around the State of Oregon. Through this work, she introduced the Invention Convention to Tualatin Elementary School. Evie also served on the State Textbook Commission for a 4-year term. In 1990 she received the Milken Educators Award that recognizes outstanding educators along with $25,000.
Even though she received many recognitions and awards, Evie often shared that the real highlight of her career was the children she felt privileged to work with. She showed up every day with a “full and warm heart” as colleagues often stated. She retired in 1996. After retirement she substitute taught, volunteered and was the honorary grandmother exclusively at Tualatin Elementary. We will always remember her in our thoughts and through the ways we serve the Tualatin Elementary community.
