The Puma Pride
Week of November 5, 2018
Principal's Message
It is hard to believe that we are already in the month of November. As I visited classrooms last week, they were full of energy and engaged learning. On Monday, we introduced the students to the Willow Dale "Kindness Tree" in order to build a culture of kindness throughout Willow Dale. Our talented art teacher, Mrs. Dow, created the tree, which is located across from the art room. Kindness hearts will be available in the classrooms for students to recognize a peer for an act of kindness. If a student wants to acknowledge a peer for an act of kindness, they will obtain a heart, add the details of the action and place it in the container next to the kindness tree. The hearts will be hung on the tree daily. Each week, a kindness quote will be shared on morning announcements. We are looking forward to seeing our tree bloom and our school filled with kindness throughout the year.
Students in grade K-5 delved into their science units. Many of our classrooms are home to living creatures that our young scientists are observing and investigating. As a result of the beautiful weather, our first graders had the opportunity to study habitats outside. Our second-graders will be visiting the William Tennent High School Planetarium to learn about how the stars and solar system formed.
Mr. Julius and I enjoyed seeing so many parents attend the Fall Halloween Parade. A big thank you to our Home and School Room Captains who organized and assisted with the parade and classroom parties. Take a look at the pictures located towards the end of the newsletter.
Over the next few weeks, your child's teacher will begin administering the Fountas and Pinnell benchmark testing. This assessment is given to determine a student's independent and instructional reading level and allows teachers to assess comprehension skills. The data collected by the teacher will be used to personalize learning for the students. If you have any questions about the assessment, please reach out to your child's teacher.
Please mark your calendar with the following events. November 6, 2018- No school for students. November 9, 2018, marks the end of the first marking period. Report cards will be distributed on Monday, November 19. Monday, November 12 is an early dismissal day. November 13 is American Education Week. We are looking forward to having all of our parents visit on the designated day and time. Parent Conferences will be held on November 20 and 21, 2018. If you still need to sign up for a conference time, please reach out to your child's teacher. For more information, see the events section in the newsletter.
Thank you to our parents who have been following the parent drop off and dismissal procedures. By now students should be comfortable exiting and entering the car on their own. Procedures can be found in previous newsletters or in the Parent/Student Handbook located on the Willow Dale website. The safety of the children and staff is our first priority!
On behalf of the teachers, staff, and administration, thank you for partnering with us to ensure that every Willow Dale student is successful.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Cathy Perkins

News from the Library- Book Fair
Dear Willow Dale Families,
Willow Dale’s annual Book Fair will be held in the library NOVEMBER 12-19. We will again be showcasing books from The Doylestown Bookshop.
Parents are welcome all week long from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM, and at our special Family Shopping Night on Thursday, November 15, from 4:30-7:00 PM. You are welcome to bring your children that evening, or you might want to come alone to purchase some surprises.
Your child will visit the book fair during regularly scheduled library classes. If your child plans to purchase a book on that day, please send along an envelope with cash or a check (payable to “Willow Dale Home and School”) for the purchase amount or limit. Average book prices range from $5-$20. Please note the state of Pennsylvania requires us to charge sales tax, so you will need to calculate the additional 6% sales tax. We will also accept credit cards during the parent evening this year.
Please consider purchasing books through the Willow Dale Book Fair for your children. Proceeds from the book fair provide funding for the reading, library, and makerspace programs. Thank you for your support!

Feeding Everyone at Special Times
In 2012 NJS Charity Fund was founded for the sole purpose of helping local people in need have a nice holiday meal at Thanksgiving. The thought of doing more expanded to the Christmas Holiday as well. The focus is to supply nice holiday meals for people in need predominantly in the Bucks and Montgomery Counties. The name has now been changed to FEAST. Feeding Everyone at Special Times. Special times has been defined by FEAST as any time people are in need of a good meal. Our primary focus is but not limited to Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. What started as a little bit of a whim, has started to gain some traction and grow in size. Give people a hand up not a handout.
What we do?
Individual Meals are prepared. Turkey/Ham, Stuffing, Vegetable, Bread, Dessert.
As people are identified, they are added to our list. Privacy is respected as most of the people we serve come from local schools and churches.
If you are interested in participating in the FEAST program go online to https://tug21959.wordpress.com/meals/

Counselors' Corner
With the holidays right around the corner, here are some ways to reduce holiday stress.
The holidays are a time of great joy and excitement for children and their families. But they can also sometimes bring with them the added stress of trying to deliver the best holiday celebration ever. Children's Hospital Boston psychiatrist Stuart Goldman, MD, offers the following tips and advice to help children and parents enjoy healthy, happy holidays.
School Vacation
Add a little structure to your child's school vacation. Plan activities, such as playing board games, going to the movies or sledding outside. Consider scheduling activities the whole family can participate in together.
Get Outdoors
Keep children active. The winter brings less daylight, which can lead to more inside time and less physical
activity. Try to get outdoors, even if only for a little while.
Bedtime
Make sure children get plenty of sleep. Holiday time often begets later bedtimes. Make sure you get your child gets back on his regular sleep schedule before going back to school.
Talk
Be mindful of past events, like the death of a loved one or a divorce in the family, that may resurface around the holidays. Address these changes in advance, explaining that the holidays will be different and that it's okay to express feelings about it.
