WHES School Counselor Connection

Bridging Social and Emotional Learning with Academic Success

October 19, 2020

Greetings Parents and Scholars

As we travel through the 2020-2021 school year we want our WHES scholars and families to know that we are here to provide support during these uncertain times. The academic growth and success of each student is our ultimate priority. Parents/Guardians we need your continued support to ensure that each of our students are present each day and are continuing to work on their assignments virtually or via instructional packets. We also know that our students are trying to adjust to virtual learning and in some aspects are missing the social and emotional connections with their peers. Our 2020-2021 school year vision is to ensure that our scholars increase their academic success by becoming more socially and emotionally aware.

As a reminder Social and Emotional Learning also referred to as SEL is defined as the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. In view these are the skills and morals that are instilled within many of us and have ultimately determined our success in life. SEL can be taught at home, school and in the community. SEL competencies include skills that scholars will utilize throughout their lives as they become successful citizens. As you review the information on SEL in this newsletter think of ways you can continue to implement these skills with your student(s) during virtual learning.

LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT SELF-AWARENESS AND SOCIAL-AWARENESS!

GRADES PRE-K-1

ACTIVITY

Parents assist your student with drawing a picture that shows how they are feeling. For our kindergarten and first grade students allow them to write a short sentence about their picture. Talk with your student about their drawing and the emotion they are feeling. It is important to be able to identify the emotion you are feeling, what caused the emotion and how to manage these feelings.
