Dear Parents & Caregivers,
Our 3rd grade students take federally required assessments every spring. These assessments help us understand how our students are growing academically, compared to their peers across the state. The state uses this information to provide more support and resources to the schools in the greatest need.
This year, the English language arts and math assessment for grades 3-8 is called the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). The IAR is almost exactly the same this year as the assessment that students took last year, only slightly shorter. The Illinois Assessment of Readiness measures the same Illinois Learning Standards and includes the same test questions that teachers and students have become familiar with over the past four years.
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness will change over the next few years, as the state works to make it more useful to schools and families. Next year, we will have the results back from the test much more quickly. The year after that, the test will adapt to each student, so we gain a better understanding of where each individual student is in their learning. We will continue to be able to measure students’ growth from year to year throughout these improvements.
Please contact me with any questions you may have at 815-838-0542x2104 or email jkoziol@d91.net.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Koziol
Winter Notes:
If your family is impacted by illness this winter, we would like to remind you to call the district attendance line to report absences by 9am. If you would like to request homework, you should do so in that message and indicate whether you will pick it up or wish for it to be sent home with another student.
Since it has been quite cold the past few weeks, I would like to remind caregivers that students line up and have recess outside as long as it is 20 degrees or over. We would like to see children wearing heavy coats, hats, and gloves each day in order to stay warm. If your child does not have winter gear, please contact our office and we will make sure warm gear is provided.
In case of emergency closings, there are lots of ways to get the information. The district will send out a call, email, and text. In addition, our website, WJOL, and the Emergency Closing Center will be updated.

Notes From the Nurse
I have a few reminders to pass along to assist you in the upcoming months.
1. Current Second grade students are required by the State of Illinois to have a dental exam form completed and turned in by May 15, 2019. Many of the students have completed the dental requirement but there are still a few students not in compliance with this law. According to the law, report cards can be withheld if the dental form is not on file.
2. Many children have been coming to the Health Office for coughs, chapped lips, dry skin, headaches, etc. We are not able to provide Tylenol / Motrin, cough drops etc. without authorization and you must supply the needed item. If you feel your child will need one or more of these items, please complete a yellow medication release form and return it to school with the item to be given to your child. These items will be kept in the Health Office for administration as needed.
3. If your child has a cold with a frequent cough or congestion or requires medication for symptoms, please keep them home until they are able to be at school comfortably and without the aid of medication.
4. If your child has a rash, sore throat, pink eyes, discharge from the eyes please keep your child home. It is recommended that you visit a health professional to determine if the condition is contagious. Children with suspected pink eye or strep will be sent home. A note is required from the doctor in order to return to school.
5. Children with fevers may not return to school until they are fever free for 24 hours without the aid of Tylenol or Motrin.
6. Children diagnosed with pink eye (conjunctivitis) must be on antibiotic drops for 24 hours before returning to school. A doctor's note is required.
7. Children who have vomiting or diarrhea may not return to school until 24 hours after the last episode.
8. When calling in a child’s absence from school, please give the reason for the absence, such as a cold, flu, vomiting, headache etc. this helps the health office keep on top of illness trends, gives us a heads up when the child returns to school and provides information required by the Will County Health Department.
Please remind your child to wash their hands and use good hygiene to prevent the spread of germs.
Please feel free to call or stop by the Health Office if you have any questions or concerns about your child or any of the above information.
Mrs. Gilkerson, RN

The Speech Spot with Mrs. Barker
Tips for promoting the “R” sound
Many of my speech students at Milne Grove School have difficulties producing the “R” speech sound. “R” is one of the last speech sounds to develop in the American English sound system. If your child is under the age of 7 and is pronouncing w/r, try some of the following tips.
1. Listen to lots of words, which contain the (R) sound. Identify where the sound can be heard. Is the R at the beginning, middle or end of the word?
2. Exaggerate the /R/ sound while reading with your child.
3. Play with sounds that sound like /R/. Pretend to bark like a dog and say r-r-ruff, r-r-ruff; growl like a bear and say gr-r-r-r; or crow like a rooster and say er-er-er.
4. Practice making lots of “L” sounds and words. Many children with poor “Rs” have weak tongue elevation. Have fun making “clicking sounds” with your tongue. Look at yourself in the mirror as you make the sounds and L words. Encourage your child to watch his/her tongue move!
5. Make mistakes with your speech and see if your child can catch the mistakes. (I wan to the wed cau.) Correct your errors when child identifies them. (You are right; I should have said I ran to the red car.)
6. Practice making the “eee” sound. Saying “eee” forces the tongue to retract and stabilize on the upper back molars. Tongue stabilization is the key to making a strong R sound.
Don’t force your child to correct their speech. One key to correcting an /r/ sound is to increase your child’s ability to hear the /r/ and discriminate between good and bad /r/ sounds.
Savvy Solutions with Mrs. DeSandre
by Mrs. DeSandre, Milne Grove Social Worker
This Month’s Topic: Positive Parenting: Encouragement
Encouraging your child, begins with encouraging yourself!
Have patience with yourself
Enjoy yourself and other people
Get to know your own strengths and good qualities
Have the courage to be imperfect
Value yourself
See parenting as a challenge to be met, not a problem to overcome
Encouraging your child...
Love and accept your child. Constantly pointing out what is wrong can be discouraging to children and will not help them improve. You can accept your child without accepting the misbehavior. Discuss bad choices without implying your child is bad.
Notice your child’s efforts. Improvement takes time. Try to find at least one effort or improvement and look for a chance to tell your child what you have noticed.
Appreciate your child. When you say and show that you really appreciate your child, you encourage a sense of belonging. Notice what is important to your child and take an interest in what they like. Build on your child’s strengths.
Have faith in your child. Children need to know and see that parents believe they can succeed. Keep in mind that growing up takes years and remember that your child does learn many skills over time.
Art
In March and April, all Milne Grove artists are continuing to explore the art of painting, while moving into the art of sculpture in the weeks ahead. Currently, we are also concentrating on communication skills when discussing completed artwork during critique. Students also continue to focus on communication in written form through “Artist Statements” for all projects completed. Be sure to ask your child about their artwork - you will be amazed at what you learn!
Currently, the kindergarten students are in the final stages of their Pop Art Wayne Thiebaud inspired sundae paintings and will progress into the art of printmaking. Students will use the “monoprint” technique to create a flower still life with chalk accents. First grade students will continue their outer space mixed media paintings and later turn their attention to the talented, yet mysterious world of Vincent Van Gogh prior to creating their own Sunflower Painting.
The second grade students will begin a watercolor cityscape in spirit of Chicago. Students will view many skyline images for inspiration and learn about the countless sites and classic architecture within the great Windy City. The third grade artists are currently working on the color wheel and the work of Jim Dine. In the weeks ahead, will create a cake sculpture with air dry clay and other miscellaneous sculptural materials to bring their designs to life!
For more information on art classes at Milne Grove, please be sure to check us out on the web at www.d91.net. Thank you for your interest in your child’s art education.
