June in the Library
2015
Summer Reading!
On display for the month of June are the recommended summer reading books for rising 7th and 8th graders. There's lots to choose from! Students can see all their choices, and summaries of the books, at the DMS Summer Reading Website.
Times They are a Changing
Changes to the library coming this summer! By the time students and faculty arrive next fall, the library will have a teaching space with a projector and white board! The fishbowl room will become the Chromebook help desk center, with our very own middle school help desk person! With all the new things coming in, there will be some shifting and moving of shelves and desktops and library materials. More to come!
Classes in the Library
6th Grade
Ms. Unger and Ms. Lyons' reading students came to the library for summer reading book talks! Students heard about ten books from the recommended summer reading list, and then got to browse all 30 books. Students noted down books that looked good, and almost everyone was able to leave with at least one potential read. Some wrote down a lot more! Of particular interest was the nonfiction book Red Madness: How a Medical Mystery Changed What We Eat by Gail Jarrow. Students loved its gross-out factor! Other popular choices seemed to be Graceling by Kristin Cashore, Tangerine by Edward Bloor, and Feed by M.T. Anderson.
7th Grade
Ms. Cummings and Ms. Tapply's reading students came to the library for summer reading book talks! Students heard about ten books from the recommended summer reading list, and then got to browse all 30 books. Students noted down books that looked good, and almost everyone was able to leave with at least one potential read. Some wrote down a lot more! Of particular interest was Chime by Franny Billingsley. Chime was presented as a bit of a challenge to read, and a lot of students seemed up for the challenge! Other popular choices seemed to be science fiction books The Roar by Emma Clayton and Legend by Marie Lu.
8th Grade
In Library Research students explored changes they'd like to see in their communities. Using print sources, subscription databases, and websites, students focused in on a specific topic. Using graphic organizers, they arranged their ideas and narrowed down their search to three specific "how" or "why" questions. Students they chose a final question and created an annotated bibliography of sources that would help them to understand and answer their question.
Have a Wonderful Summer!
