Focus on Phonological Awareness
What is Phonological Awareness?
Phonological Awareness is an umbrella term that includes all the sound units of our language, including rhymes, sentences, syllables, and phonemes. The ability to hear and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in a word. Children need to know how to play with the sounds of language. They must be able to break apart the sounds in words. A phonological weakness will impair a child's ability to decode words.
All activities should be done orally, without seeing letters and words. Here a few websites with activities to try with your students.

Book Spotlight- Soar by Joan Bauer
Jeremiah is the world’s biggest baseball fan and he knows just about everything there is to know about the game. So when he’s told he can’t play baseball following an operation on his heart, Jeremiah decides he’ll do the next best thing and become a coach. The problem is, there’s not much call for a twelve-year-old coach.
Hillcrest, where Jeremiah and his father Walt have just moved, is a town known for its championship baseball team. But Jeremiah finds the town caught up in a scandal and about ready to give up on baseball. It’s up to Jeremiah and his can-do spirit to get the town – and the team – back in the game.

The Power of Yet!
Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andreae is great for starting a conversation about differences in the classroom. The book centers around a Giraffe who can’t dance like all the other jungle animals and is made fun of because of his lack of dancing skills. This could be a wonderful tool for starting the conversation about the power of yet. The link below is to a graphic organizer from the @brownbagteacher that could be used with your students.
