Superintendent's Message

Dear JUHSD Community,

In observance of Veterans Day, our district office and schools will be closed on Thursday, November 11, 2021. Veterans Day is a holiday to honor our military veterans, their service, and the sacrifices they and their families have made to protect our country. I encourage our school community to learn more about the role veterans have played in U.S. history by clicking here. To all our veterans, we thank you.

Please note that school is in session on Friday, November 12th.

Have a great weekend.

Warmly,

Toni Presta

Superintendent

Daylight Savings Time Change

Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at 2:00 am. At this time, clocks will “fall back” one hour, giving us more daylight in the dark autumn and winter mornings. See details about the history of this change and why we still observe DST today, please click on this article link from The Old Farmer's Almanac website.

COVID Testing for Students

COVID-19 testing for students began on Monday, November 1st and takes place before school, during brunch, and lunch. There is no cost to students or families and insurance information does not need to be provided. When asked, you may fill in your insurance information, or you may select that you choose not to provide this information.

Testing is strictly voluntary for all students, with the exception of those who participate in close contact sports (indoors without masks). Those students are subject to mandatory testing and will be notified separately of their requirement to test.

All students whom wish to test will need to register, only once. Students under the age of 18 must have guardian consent to complete the registration form.

Links for registration are school site specific, so each student will need to register for testing at their specific school:

Oceana High in the News!

Students from Laurie Hughes' cooking class partnered with Pie Ranch Farms in Pescadero to help with the Hopi Blue Corn Harvest. As quoted in their monthly newsletter, one OHS student said, "It felt so grounding to sit around shucking the corn and reminded her of her upbringing in Nicaragua." For more information on this amazing partnership, along with other ways in which you can volunteer with Pie Ranch Farms, please click here to read their November online newsletter.

National STEM & STEAM Day

National STEM/STEAM Day is held on November 8th, encouraging and inspiring young people to explore and pursue their interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.

JUHSD Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways offer a curriculum that aims to strengthen STEAM literacy and ignite interest in STEAM-related careers among all students. Our CTE programs are high-quality and provide a deeper understanding of STEAM career pathways, building interest and skills in STEAM by making content more relevant and tangible.

CTE pathways demonstrate the link between what's taught in the classroom with the wider world. CTE Capstone graduates will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to be global citizens, effective communicators, industry-ready, problem solvers, critical thinkers, and leaders. Our project and problem based learning illustrates the power of CTE and STEAM to address real-world challenges.

For more information on our District's CTE program, please view their October 2021 Newsletter.
