November 22,23 & 24: No School in Session - Thanksgiving Vacation
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dismissal procedures: Please remember that if you are picking your child up, and this is different than normal procedure a note is necessary. We also ask that you assist us at the end of the day by making eye contact with the teacher so he/she knows who each student is going with. Please don't stand in the doors or in places that the teacher can't see you. It is for security reasons that teachers are making eye contact.
Thank you to all parents/families that attended conferences this month. These times are 1 great way to have open communication between school and home about your child. Please stay in communication with your child's teacher all throughout the school year about learning progress and any questions you may have.
The cold weather is here so winter coats, hats and mittens are a must. Children are outside multiple times a day for up to 20 minutes at a time. We watch the temperature and all students do stay in when the temperature/wind chill is below 0. If you need assistance with obtaining winter clothing, please contact the office and we will assist you with this.
Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving break!

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT ABRAMS?
Notes from the Office
PARENT NOTES: There has been an increasing number of late communication phone calls between parents and the school office regarding end of the day transportation. Your help in following the procedure outlined in the Family Handbook for 2017-18 students is so greatly appreciated!
The Family Handbook for 2017-18 states: "If your child needs to go home on a different bus or get dropped off at a different location, please send a note to your child's classroom teacher the day of the change or call the school office PRIOR to 2:00 P.M. If your child has a change in bus routine for multiple days, please send a note each morning with appropriate change ...Without prior notice, your child will be sent home on their regular bus." Please note this includes changes such as someone picking up your child rather than them riding the bus. These types of changes need a note sent each day. If the change occurs once your child is in school a phone call MUST be made to the school office NO LATER than 2:00 PM. Office personal needs time to let the classroom teacher know about the change.
After School Activities: "Students staying after school for dance, scouts, etc., MUST HAVE A NOTE FOR EACH TIME they stay. Without a note, students will be sent home on their regular bus."
High School Choral Concert: Don’t forget to return your child’s permission slip for attendance of the high school concert on Wednesday, November 29th (grades 5K-5th). Without a signed permission slip your child will have to remain here at school, reading or studying in the library. If you have lost the form, please call the office for another one to be sent home with your child.
“Abrams Family Tree” Once again this year we would like to bring back our tree decorating project. Every family will receive a blank ornament on November 21st. It will be sent home with the youngest child in your family. If you didn’t receive one, or if it was misplaced or lost in transit, or if your family situation would be better served by doing two separate ornaments, please send a note to school and we will send you another ornament to decorate.
This is not a contest. There are no prizes. We would simply like to have every family represented on our Abrams Family Tree. Be sure that your name is prominently displayed on one or both sides of the ornament and the rest is up to you. The ornaments can be brought to school any time after December 1st. They will be returned to you on December 22nd, so that your masterpiece can be proudly displayed on your own tree at home. Thanks for helping out and taking the time for this family project.

Thanks to CPTO..Music Instruments will be here soon! Thank you, thank you, thank you, to the CPTO!!! The instruments are coming, the instruments are coming!!! I am so excited and can't wait for the students at Abrams to experience Orff instruments in music class in the near future! Thank you so much for granting my request. I'm truly blessed to teach here at Abrams.
5th Grade Diorama: The 5th graders just finished learning about Native Americans in Social Studies. To show what they learned each student was given a tribe to create a diorama about. Each diorama needed to show the tribes people, environment, shelter and activities the tribe members would be doing. Looking at the dioramas the students could easily compare and contrast the four cultural regions that were discussed in class. The dioramas were on display for the school to visit. The students' work and attention to detail was amazing!
Great Plains - Cheyene - Isaac Bramer 5M
Northwest Coast - Tlingit - Addison Borst 5L
Eastern Woodlands - Oneida - Darian Patz 5L
4th Grade Science
Mrs. Ingram's class celebrated the end of their Plant Structure and Fuction chapter in Science by making edible flowers. The students were amazed that they could make the parts of a flower out of candy.

Library News
Technological Collaborations abound! The 1st-grade classes of Mrs. Petersen and Mrs. Skarban have been studying the author Mem Fox and her books about Australian animals and culture as part of the Global Read Aloud program during their library classtimes. To collaborate and with students who are also reading the same books as part of the Global Read Aloud, each class got to discuss the books with students in other states via Google Hangouts which is a web 2.0 technology similar to Skype or Facetime. Mrs. Petersen's class connected with a class in Pennsylvania and Mrs. Skarban's class met up with students in Arkansas! We learned a little about the other students and their state and that we all enjoyed some of the same parts of the books! It was a fun way to collaborate outside of our classroom!
November is National Picture Book Month! What a perfect opportunity to cuddle up with your young ones and enjoy a good book! Families are encouraged to choose some picture books for family reading time and discuss how illustrators bring stories to life and teach through pictures what is not always stated in the words. Drawing conclusions from pictures and paying attention to detail are important life skills! Challenge your child to look for things that the illustrations are telling about the character or the setting. For ideas on books to check out from community libraries, check the school district library media web pages!
Food Service Notes
A Note From Food Service…
A child’s eligibility status from the previous school year is carried into the current school year for up to 30 days, beginning on the first day of school, or until a new eligibility determination is made, whichever comes first. If no new application is submitted and eligibility is not established through direct certification by the end of the 30-day carryover period, a child’s eligibility for free or reduced price meals expires and the student then goes to the normal paid rate.
So if you haven't filled out a current free/reduced application, please take the time to fill it out for this school year.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact Amanda Sonnenburg at 920-848-4466 ext. 3 or email at amanda.sonnenburg@of-ps.org.
