During the last 3 months of distance learning, Catholic schools have not only focused on the continuity of learning, but also the continuity of community! The strong Catholic school community is one of the factors that draws parents and students. This July, we are excited to offer you an opportunity to learn how your Catholic School colleagues across the state of California and Nevada have cultivated both classroom and school community.
Please join us for “Preparing for Fall 2020: Cultivating the Catholic School Community,” a series of panel presentations with strategies and tips from the field, including an opportunity for Q&A. This is a no-cost event that you can join from the comfort of your home (or even your car!). Mark your calendars:
Registration is required. Please see the attached “Preparing for Fall 2020” flyer for registration links. This is brought to you in collaboration with the dioceses across the state.

Racial Justice and the Catholic Church
6-Week Virtual Summer Book Club for Catholic Educators June 26th to July 30th
Register by June 21st
Catholic schools have a long tradition of serving diverse families who seek the highest quality of education for their children. Animated by St. Ignatius' vision that we are men and women for others, Catholic educators have a responsibility to understand the depth of pain, anger, and hardship racism has caused people of color in our country. If we are to see this vision into reality, we must work for racial justice both in our Catholic church and schools. We invite you to take a step toward this vision by engaging in a six-week summer book club on Fr. Bryan Massingale’s Racial Justice and the Catholic Church that will include introspective, meaningful, and sustained conversations with other Catholic educators on racism.
How long will it take? This book club will run for six weeks during the summer.
When does it start? There will be a live presentation on Friday, June 26th at 1 p.m. EST. Small group book club conversations will begin the week of June 29th.
How much does it cost? There is no charge to participate in the book club. The only cost is the purchase of Fr. Bryan Massingale’s text, Racial Justice and the Catholic Church.
What is the book club format? The book club will include small group conversations, three live virtual presentations by the Roche Center, and conclude with a virtual candlelight mass.

Climate Change Literacy
The Climate Reality Project has been leading the way in teaching adults, teens, and children about the climate crisis with the use of a constantly updated version of the slideshow Mr. Gore used in the award-winning film, Inconvenient Truth. The Sierra Club has been addressing climate change most recently through the formation of the Bay Area Climate Change Literacy Project. Its purpose is to help educate Bay Area teachers on the climate crisis so that they are then equipped to teach their students about the crisis to enable them to become climate change literate.
Now, these two prominent climate action organizations are working together in Northern California to provide free and accessible training for Catholic school teachers on climate change literacy as well as to direct these teachers to leverage ready-made classroom resources on the climate crisis, including written lesson plans on various aspects of climate change. This collaboration has resulted in a 75-minute live Zoom training created for teachers on the fundamentals of the climate crisis. The live, interactive presentation will be offered on two separate days and times: Tue July 14 at 10AM or Thu July 16 at 4 PM.
There is no charge to attend the presentation and it is open to all teachers, regardless of grade taught from pre-K up through 12th grade. Not simply geared toward science teachers, this free training is also intended for teachers of any subject matter or discipline who are interested in incorporating climate change material into their lesson plans.
To attend one of these sessions on either of the dates listed below, teachers simply need to click on the weblink below and then select the day/time of their preference once on Eventbrite. They will then later receive an email containing the Zoom link to use on the day of the event.
Authentic Technology Integration With Dr. Lori Elliott - YOU CAN STILL SIGN UP!
The proliferation of technology tools has changed the way students learn and how we can differentiate to meet diverse needs. Teachers can leverage technology to improve student learning by infusing technology tools with content-area standards to provide content in deep, engaging ways. Technology-rich instruction allows students to choose multiple ways to produce and share content to show what they have learned.
These two days are incredibly beneficial to you! You will learn more in the 1st day than you have in days of in-service. I keep registering and going again and again because I learn a little bit more every time. The class is online and Lori is high energy and fantastic.
