RAFT
Grades K-12
Directions:
RAFT is an acronym that stands for:
R- Role of the writer
A- Audience- Who will be reading this writing: the teacher, other students, parents, people in the community, an editor, an organization, etc.
F- Format- What is the best way to present this writing: in a letter, an article, a report, a poem?
T- Topic- Who or what is the subject of this writing: a famous scientist, a prehistoric cave dweller, a reaction to a specific event?
The purpose of this strategy is to engage writing across the curriculum. It is a way to encourage students to assume a role, consider their audience while examining a topic from their chosen perspective, and writing in a particular format.
Variations:
All of the examples can serve as motivators by giving students choice, appealing to their interests and learning profiles, and adapting to student readiness levels. RAFT tasks can assess student understanding particularly if care has been taken when designing the activity to align with the KUDs (Know, Understand, Do) of the Units of Study.
