Message from Geordie

Happy Friday St Bernie’s Families,

Another busy week around our school with much fun and learning inside and outside our classrooms. I managed to get into Yr 1 to see our students learning all about wetlands, writing about their characteristics and making dioramas to show their knowledge. In Science I have been blown away with the enthusiasm and engagement of our older students in their experiments. I have seen classes looking at the density of liquids while making lava lamps and others experimenting with how soluble different substances are in water. I have also been very impressed with the way our students have learnt to write up their learning into proper reports.

Now that our Registration Audit has been completed, I am really looking forward to focusing on the future and our Strategic Planning journey is now well under way. The Leadership Team will work closely with the an external consultant, the School Advisory Council, Catholic Education WA Consultants, Staff and our community to create a vision statement and set achievable goals to work towards. We began with the goal of having a finalised plan to present at the AGM in late November and we believe this is now an achievable goal.

Below is the timeline we have created that shows what we are aiming to achieve this year. We are currently finalising a survey for families that will be distributed to everyone in Week One of Term 3 - I encourage everyone to participate if they can.

Finally, in staffing news, I am really happy and excited to announce that Mrs Angela Reid will be off on maternity leave after this term and that Mr Cormac Murtagh will be taking over the Year 6 Blue gang for Semester 2.

Cormac has been teaching our Physical Education classes this semester; however, his passion has always been in the classroom. Prior to being at St Bernadette’s he has worked in upper primary roles at Mel Maria CPS in Attadale and in a previous life Cormac worked in the corporate world. Cormac is passionate, organised, has a good relationship with his students and he will be a great fit with our Year 6’s. I also wish Angela all the best on her new adventure and we look forward to a visit with her new arrival later this year!

Obviously, this leaves a void in our PE Position and I thank both Kristy Watson (Jnr: PP-Yr 2) and Mel Resuggan (Snr: Yr 3-6) who are looking forward to taking over the PE classes in Semester Two.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

What is the Rainbows Program

When a change takes place in a family whether it is a death, divorce, separation, or trauma, it may have a profound effect upon the whole family. Research suggests that children may benefit from having a safe, space in which to explore their thoughts and feelings.

Here at St. Bernadette's, we offer 'Rainbows' which is a peer support program for children who have suffered a significant loss in their life's. Students will participate in 12 sessions over term 3 and 4, undertake a liturgy followed by a whole day workshop. The groups are guided by a trained Facilitator as they work through a journal book.

Places will be limited this year and we are recommending students who have been on the program for a few years allow other students to access the program. The sessions will take place after school on a Monday.

If you feel that your child/ren would benefit from this program, please register your interest on via the link below.

I will also be holding a parent information session in the Library next Friday, 18 June 2021 at 2.00pm. I look forward to seeing you there!

Thank you,

Mrs. Groom
