West Middleton Update
~Building a Compassionate, Collaborative Community For All~
A few quick updates from Mrs. Krych for April
Hopefully all of our families will be receiving this newsletter in "real time" now that we've worked out the glitch in our Infinite Campus messenger system. One of our school goals is family engagement and we have been working, both individually and at a school level, on getting and staying connected to our families. Having our families feel welcome and heard is extremely important to us. We hope that through your classroom updates and these school and grade level updates you feel connected to your child's classroom and to West Middleton. If you have additional ideas or thoughts on how we can connect more and in what areas, please send me an email (kkrych@mcpasd.k12.wi.us).
April is traditionally known as "testing month" for some of our grade levels. During the month of April, all 3rd and 4th grade students will participate in our state testing, the Forward Exam. For those of you with older children who might remember, this is comparable to the WKCE. The Forward Exam is one of the main pieces that go into our school report card ratings. We're doing everything we can to set our Wolverines up for success. If you have a 3rd or 4th grade student, their classroom teacher will be sharing their specific testing dates with you. Please make sure they are getting a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast. For our K-2 Wolverines, make sure you cheer on our 3rd and 4th graders. We know they are going to represent WM well!
Don't forget that there is NO SCHOOL on Friday, April 13th for a staff professional development day. Enjoy the spring and don't forget to stop and smell the flowers.
Take Care,
Mrs. Krych

Maynard's Lil' Ducks Reading Program
Just a reminder to turn in your reading log calendars to get your tickets for the West Middleton night at the Mallards on June 13th! Have students bring them to school and turn them into their teachers. Please contact Jess Beem at jbeem@mcpasd.k12.wi.us with any questions you may have! We have received some reading logs without a student's name on it. If you returned a log and possibly left your child's name off of it, please contact Jess Beem.
PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) April Updates
Hello from our West Middleton PBIS team! We’ve had a busy and amazing month of learning. We’ve been focusing on having safe, respectful and responsible behaviors in our bathrooms. Our 4th grade Justice Pack made an awesome video showing all the ways to show the expected behaviors in the bathroom and it was shown at our school assembly. Thanks Justice Pack! Next month we will be focusing on...being a LEARNER in the classroom. This focus will be important as we dig in for some big learning in April. Thanks for sharing your children with us.
PTO Spring Board Election & 18-19 Volunteers Needed
PTO BOARD SPRING ELECTION
The PTO is in the process of filling out the incoming board. Two positions are open to fill the President and Vice-President roles. It is recommended these new terms are held for two years, although by-laws do allow one-year terms. The deadline to submit your name for the spring ballot is Tuesday, April 17. Please submit your name and desired position directly to PTO Co-President, Melissa Corrigan: corriganm@tds.net, 608-228-8201. If there are more than 1-2 candidates per position, an election will take place TU, April 24 at the PTO board meeting.
PTO Volunteers Needed
18-19 Wolverine Dash Planning Committee Formation
We have a planning committee with two committee chairs, Anne Ernst (amernst2@gmail.com) and Jennifer Moore (jlmoore2908@gmail.com). We are looking for 3-5 additional volunteers to join the planning committee. Our next meeting is Wednesday, April 11th at 6:30 in the West Middleton library. Health & Wellness - 5-2-1-0 Elementary School Challenge
Beginning April 2, our school, along with other elementaries in the district, will be participating in the 5-2-1-0 Challenge throughout the month of April. This challenge is based on 5-2-1-0, a national, proven effective, healthy lifestyle program. Children are taught good habits to aim for every day:
5 – servings of fruits and veggies
2 – hours or less of recreational screen time
1 – hour or more of physical activity
0 – no drinks with added sugar; drink more water
Students will watch a short video each Monday of the challenge to learn about one of these healthy habits. During lunch, students will record how well they’re doing that week by placing tallies on a big piece of paper in the cafeteria. At the end of the week, we’ll celebrate how healthy our school was. The videos will be posted on the MCPASD Family Wellness Facebook page for your reference each week.
Each component of 5-2-1-0 will have it’s own week to focus on:
April 2-6: 5 or more fruits & veggies
April 9-13: 2 or less hours screen time
April 16-20: 1 hour of physical activity
April 23-27: 0 sugary drinks
For more information, please see the email recently sent to parents/guardians from Infinite Campus or take a look at our website: mcpasd.k12.wi.us/wellness Feel free to join us each week in the challenge by implementing strategies at home. Thank you for helping encourage these habits at your house as well!
