A Message from the Principal
February has been very busy and exciting! All WIDA testing for our English Language Learners is complete. Seventeen students caught up to their grade-level peers in reading and have been removed from reading interventions! Over 20 students in 4th and 5th grade earned 100% or HIGHER on their Unit 9 and 10 math tests. We take learning very seriously here at Stephen Decatur and our students are amazing us daily with their progress.
The Sweetheart Dance was a huge success. Families and staff had a great time dancing the night away. Select students got to go to a Jr. NBA event at the convention center. They loved every second of it. Sixth graders are headed to DMS today to begin their transition to middle school. I can't believe how fast the school year is moving!
March 4th begins the IREAD3 state testing window. This year second graders will take the test along with third graders. This is a reading test that assesses skills learned from K-3. There are three sections of the test. One section tests foundational skills and the other two sections test reading comprehension. We will start second-grade testing on March 5th and third-grade testing on March 12th.

E= Events: We cannot control things that happen
R= Response: We can control our response to the event
O=Outcome: Having a proper response will get the desired outcome.
This concept is powerful for all of us. Daily, many things happen that are out of our control. We can lash out or we can pause, think, and then respond. Pausing for reflection allows us to get the outcome that we need and want.
