This Month in the Art Room

October - Hispanic Heritage Month

Learning About Other Cultures

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15.

In the art room we will be studying the folk arts and fine arts of Mexican culture. Below is a list of what each class will be covering this month:

  • 5th - folk art: symmetrical sugar skull
  • 4th - the art of Frida Kahlo
  • 3rd - the art of Diego Rivera
  • 2nd - folk art: huichol yarn art
  • 1st - folk art: clay suns
  • kdg - folk art: pumpkins

2018 Rodeo Art

It's that time of year again! Students will begin brainstorming and creating their art work for the 2018 Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show this month.

District-wide, we will be showcasing the works of our 5th grade students. This will prove to be a culmination of all of their hard-work over the past several years and we are very excited to support this imaginative group of students.

Mrs. Gavin will be the only teacher working with the students on this art project, so that means that students will only work on their artwork every other week as she travels between MES and WES. Our goal is that our rodeo art will be completed by Thanksgiving break.

This is a new opportunity for our students as they will be provided the subject matter, but they will determine the artistic style and mediums to use to create their work. Of all of the 5th grade classes, we will select the top 30 pieces to represent our school. These art works will be taken to the Magnolia Rodeo Art Show to compete against other elementary schools in our district on January 20th from 10am - 2pm at Magnolia West High School. More information will be sent home in January about this special event.
