Hawk Highlights January Update
Ensuring All Students and Educators Learn and Grow Every Day
News You Can Use
Final Assessments: Students have a voice and a choice related to their final assessment that will be taken in their content areas. Teachers have already shared information related to final assessments with students. Assessments may begin Friday, January 15th. Assessments for periods 1-4 are due on Thursday, January 21st and assessment for periods 5-8 are due Friday, January 22nd. Please see https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w8FhXd3x3clk8EYJ8qDq2xJB3hJfkYtEqlmpLQfa3JM/edit?usp=sharing for the exam schedule. During the windows of times indicated on the exam schedule, your child's teacher will meet with students for 5-10 minutes to review submission instructions. Additionally, teachers will be online and available to support students during their scheduled exam times. Both exam days are half days for students. In other words, there are no scheduled classes after 11:30 am. Please review the infographic below for an overview of the final exam structure.
Credit Recovery: The NCCVT School District has a credit recovery program for students that must retake a previously failed course required for graduation. The credit recovery program utilized APEX Learning, a digitally-based curriculum that is aligned with state and district requirements. Although the credit recovery program's purpose is to support students, there are stipulations that need to be understood. Most importantly, the student must have earned a passing score on the final assessment in the corresponding original credit course to take the credit recovery course. Credit recovery courses for the fall semester must be taken between February 9th- February 28th. Please understand that there are no credit recovery courses for Career & Technical Education (career courses). If you or your child has any questions about credit recovery, please contact your child's guidance counselor.
Second Semester Hybrid Schedule Update: Last week, our District shared information with NCCVT families about the schedule starting second semester. The complete webinar can be found below. The highlights of the webinar include the following:
- Tuesday, January 26th (1st day of 2nd semester) is a full remote day. Teachers will be getting to know your child, reviewing course expectations, and setting the stage for the second semester. There is no in-person instruction this day.
- In-person hybrid classes for 11th-grade students begin Wednesday, Jan. 27th. In-person hybrid classes for 9th-grade students begin Thursday, Jan. 28th. Friday, Jan. 29th will continue as an asynchronous learning day.
- 9th grade and 12th grade are switching in-person days. Mondays will be for 12th-grade in-person classes, and Thursdays will be for 9th-grade in-person classes. This change will be in effect until the District shifts to the new Hybrid 2.0, which is a 2-day-per week schedule. Until the shift, in-person for 12th-grade students will be Mondays; 10th grade will be Tuesdays; 11th grade will be Wednesdays, and 9th grade will be Thursdays.
Summary of Hybrid 2.0
- The tentative start is February 16th– the District will provide ongoing updates.
- Students in all grades who choose to attend in-person will be assigned to Cohort 1 or Cohort 2. Each cohort attends in-person classes 2 days per week.
- Wednesdays will be the asynchronous day instead of Fridays.
- Students attending in-person will follow their daily class schedule with their own teachers.
- Students who do not select in-person will be in Cohort 3 and will be required to login to synchronous classes 4 days per week (when Cohorts 1 and 2 are in-person).
- A survey was sent last Friday to parents asking if their student will attend in-person classes when we begin the Hybrid 2.0 schedule. Survey responses are due by Wednesday, Jan. 20th, at 4:00 PM. You should have received an email and voice message about completing the survey. If you have any questions, please contact the St. Georges main office.
Exploratory & Reapplication Update: Freshmen are currently participating in exploratory rotations. Throughout the exploratory process, your child is exploring their career interests on a deeper level and also reflecting on which career programs might be a personal good fit. The exploratory rotations are preparing your child to make decisions regarding their selections for reapplication. The remaining rotations and reapplication dates are (subject to change):
Not Exploring – January 18- 22 (exam week)
Rotation 4B – Week of January 26th-29th
Rotation 5B – February 1st -5th
Rotation 6B - February 8th – 12th (Rotations end)
Reapplication Form Submission Window (via Google Form link that will be provided)- February 19th-February 24th
Career Assignment Notifications Made Via Email Prior to Start of Spring Break, April 2nd
The digital reapplication form is simple and only takes several minutes to complete. Details on accessing the form will be provided in advance of the reapplication form submission window.
A reminder that each year, some career programs oversubscribe. When a career program oversubscribes, we review individual student school records such as attendance, GPA, discipline, and the strength of the career instructor’s recommendation. We will place all students in a St. Georges career program and all students will have the opportunity to earn a career certificate at St. Georges Technical High School diploma. Parents are encouraged to discuss career goals with students and provide guidance as they make their career selections. For further questions about exploratory rotations or the reapplication process, please contact your child’s Careers & Transition instructor. Once again, please review the video that was sent via email the week of December 7th for further information. The video can be found at https://youtu.be/CbRQeRU8vto
Winter Sports: The DIAA Board of Directors received confirmation from DPH that winter sports competitions could begin on Monday, January 11th. Governor Carney also issued the Fifth Revision to the 27th Modification of the State of Emergency Declaration. The NCCVT School District approved the first two weeks of the winter season to be played without onsite spectators. No fans will be permitted at our winter sports contests between January 11th-January 24th. This permits us to review and address access and indoor site management issues to prepare for the number of permitted guests according to the Governor's most recent statement. After January 24th, we expect to be able to permit one guest per athlete starting with a parent. Depending on circumstances, visiting spectators could eventually be permitted to attend sporting events. Details will be communicated as they become available.
Second Semester Student Schedules: Individual student schedules are in the process of being finalized. Please check your Home Access Center on the 24th of January for your completed schedule. Make sure your student is following the new second-semester schedule using the times on the remote schedule that can be found at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1a19RMQ-YFtqcrvyilgXo-9zwAuoJjhWz5x_4d_3PUT4/edit?usp=sharing
