September 3 - September 7
In a growth mindset, challenges are exciting rather than threatening. So rather than thinking, oh, I'm going to reveal my weaknesses, you say, wow, here's a chance to grow. - Carol Dweck
HOOT NEWS
INSTRUCTION:
During the first few weeks of school, you should be familiarizing yourself with your students' strengths and weaknesses through formal and informal assessments. Once you know this, you can begin to form your small groups.
When you turn in your daily schedule, be sure to include the time in which you are conducting small group instruction for Math and Reading. Also, be sure to set your team planning time so that you meet together on a regular basis to discuss instruction.
TARDIES:
Starting this week, we will be giving out tardy slips after 7:45 am. Please send any student who does not have a tardy slip after 7:45 to the office to sign in. Especially those in the portables.
ELL CHECKLIST:
Teachers of ELL students, please complete the ELL checklist in LPAS. It is the same as last year. If you have questions or need assistance, please let Valerie know. It is due by the end of the day on Wednesday, Sept 5th. Any teachers new to AISD or for anyone who would like a refresh on the ELL checklist, Valerie will be in the library after school on Wednesday to help you. Please bring your laptops. It shouldn't take more than 20 minutes.
eCST/RTI LIST:
If you have academic, behavioral, attendance, or emotional concerns about a student please place them on this watch list so we can all be diligent in ensuring they receive timely intervention. Thank you so much!

RAINY DAYS:
Rain is in the forecast for next week. Please check that all of your car riders have signs for their car windows, and please send parents a Living Tree reminder to have those up in the windows to make pick-up quick and efficient.
GRANDPARENT'S DAY:
We will celebrate grandparents day at the September 7th Parent Principal Coffee in the cafeteria. Grandparents are invited to join the PPC at 7:45 to be recognized and appreciated! Please let your families know about this celebration through your weekly communication. And, if appropriate in your classroom, consider highlighting the important role of grandparents in each culture through writing activities, discussions, or special projects.
WATER:
Please encourage and facilitate students drinking more water than normal. Encourage students to drink water before dismissal. Our buses do not have AC, and the kids are sitting three to a seat. It's sweltering, and we need to help keep them cool.
ALLERGY TABLES IN CAFETERIA:
We are working to ensure that our new environment is safe for all students. Our current protocol for students with allergies at lunch is as follows: One table will have a "safe spot" for students will allergies. It will be marked appropriately and cleaned with Clorox wipes. Please train all students on the "safe spots." Teachers will also be asked to train all students on the following cafeteria behavior:
- No sharing food
- Keep your food to yourself
- Adults will clean the "safe spots."
- Wash hands after lunch.
- If you have friends that you want to sit with and you know that they are allergic to peanuts, do not bring peanut butter in your lunch. This helps to keep all students safe.
DYSLEXIA TRAINING:
This year the 504 department has added a digital version of the annual dyslexia training/presentation online! It is a requirement for ALL staff to complete this training by the end of the year. I am notifying you now as I have had requests from teachers who want more info on dyslexia and dysgraphia strategies for instruction. I would recommend for these teachers to take a look at this course sooner than later so that they can implement some of these strategies in the classroom with dyslexic students. This training will also help teachers who would like more info on the identification process. Here is the course info: Blend- Annual Dyslexia training for Staff, Course #45151
DAILY SCHEDULES:
Teachers, please send a copy of your daily schedule to the front office (Kristen McDavid) as soon as possible. Also, post near your door. Thank you!
PLAYGROUND SUPERVISION/CAFETERIA:
Thank you for spreading out on our large play areas to ensure that students are appropriately supervised. Good job! Also, with our very crowded cafeteria, it's critical that you are arrive on time to pick up your students (and count them!). Thanks a bunch!
JOIN THE PTA!
Join the PTA and we can wear jeans everyday! PTA will put a form in your box for PTA membership. You can also join online. Let's get 100% membership as soon as possible. HOOT HOOT!
STUDENT SAFETY
Fire Drill:
- Go over fire drill procedures with your class/team.
- We will have our first drill in mid September.
- Post your evacuation map by your door with the route highlighted. If you need a map email LaTrese.
- We are a very open campus.
- Please keep your door locked at all times.
- Do not prop doors or place magnets in doors.
- Do not hang badges or keys by your door.
- If you see a visitor that does not have a badge on, ESCORT them to the office, or call admin to have them escorted to the front to have their driver's license scanned.
- Question adults in the building. Do not assume they are employees of AISD or parents. Err on the side of caution and tell them they still need a badge and an escort.
- Talk to your students about never opening exit doors for adults knocking.
- Remember to sign off your computer or close it when you leave your room.
- Please remember to close gates behind you to keep students safe.
SLO - Student Learning Objectives
The SLO testing window is open until Oct. 26th.
- Pre-testing window is August 27th to October 26th.
- Student enrollment cutoff is October 19th (include all students on your roster on or before September 19th).
- Pre-approved SLO tests can be found on the SLO database, under the Resources tab.
- To access the SLO database:
- Log into the AISD Cloud
- Type SLO in the search bar
- Click on Student Learning Objective icon
- Type in E number and password
- Click on blue bar that reads: Create New SLO
- Enter and Save info
- On the home screen, you can access your class Roster to enter the score for each student
- If you decide to use an assessment that is not in the database, it will have to be approved (by campus admin) before you can administer it to your students. So please do this early so that you have time to assess your students.
- Your SLO pre-test must be submitted for campus admin to validate by October 26th.
Tuesday, September 4, our campus is scheduled for an Online Adobe Connect Meeting with our District SLO Coordinator, Amie Ortiz. This is an online forum for questions and discussion about 18-19 PPfT SLOs. Your campus Administration chose this format in lieu of an all day physical visit to your campus. You may come and go in the online meeting as you please. Feel free to ask any questions and Amie will get right back to you with an answer. You may want to review the chat history and see what others are asking in case it may also pertain to you.
This meeting will be available Tuesday, September 4, from 7:30am-4:30pm.
Please use the link below to access on Tuesday.

LIBRARY NEWS
We've had a great time with 4th and 5th graders using GooseChase for our library orientations. We will continue this week with 3rd grade and also have B week second grade classes. Please note times as I had to tweak the "normal" schedule because of the Monday holiday.
Beginning the 10th, we will have all of Kinder and 1st at their regular days/times and will also be on a A week schedule for 2nd and 3rd grades. The following week (Sept. 10-14) will be a B week and Pre-K will join the fun!
I've built in the following times for 3rd-5th to come in small groups (no more than 3 kids at a time per class) or to sign up for whole group times and collaborations: M 12:30-3:00, Th 11:30-1:00, and F 1:00-3:00. Please do not send PK, K, or 1st in small groups. New this year: 5 book check out for any student in 2nd-5th grades. This should keep kids in books for a full two weeks!

COMPUTER LAB
The computer lab will be open for classes starting Tuesday, 9/4. The lab has a new layout and new computers so please be prepared for a quick 5-10 minute introduction to new lab procedures.
I will start setting up the Doss funded software programs for our students (Accelerated Reading, Imagine Math, Moby Max, etc) after Labor day. It usually takes 2-3 weeks after school starts for AISD to set up the programs they provide (iSation, myOn, Mackinvia, Learning.com, etc.). I will send out email updates when each of these programs is available. Please contact James if you have any questions.
