Centerview families,
Well, we have moved out of the Arctic BLAST that we experienced over the past week! It was so nice to see students bundle up and head outside for recess today. Whew, well needed as the staff and students appreciated the +10 degree temps!
There has been lots of flexibility with conferences over the past couple of weeks and there will be as we continue forward. The home-school partnership will continue. Communicating and connecting will not be a moment in time, but an ongoing conversation specific to your child’s learner profile and map. Teachers have appreciated discussing your student's learning style, aspirations you have for your student and your student's interests, talents and passions; to name a few. We appreciate the time you have taken and will take as we move into March and beyond.
Our Centerview 4th grade families need to mark their calendars for February 25! See the Need to Know section for details on the virtual information sessions for fourth grade families transitioning to Westwood next year. Whew, time flies!
Trimester 3 is right around the corner. If your family wants to request a change from Extended Flexible Learning to learning at school full-time, you can make the request by contacting the Centerview school office February 22-26. We need to have any requests by the end of day on Friday, February 26 in order to have time to make any needed adjustments to class rosters for trimester 3. We’ll be working to honor all requests as we begin the trimester. Families may continue to request a move to Extended Flexible Learning at any time.
The Panthers for a Purpose virtual giving event is almost here. I hope you’ve marked your calendar for Saturday, February 27 at 7 p.m. when you can tune in live to see some familiar faces….and join together in some fun for a good cause. Find information on the event page.
Gosh, there always seems to be a lot of information to share. I appreciate families taking the time to read, think and follow through with everything we send your way on a weekly basis. If needed, do not hesitate to pick up the phone and give me a ring if you have questions or need clarification. I enjoy the conversations and appreciate the time you take.
Enjoy the “warmer weather” and all the opportunities it will bring.
Take care and stay healthy,
Mike
Updates for Extended Flex Learning families
Greetings,
Conferences are in full swing – and February is conference month. I have enjoyed taking part in a few conversations with parents and teachers over the last several days. I appreciate the opportunity to make these connections, gain insights and answer any questions that linger. Please connect with your child’s teacher to find a time to meet if you haven’t already done so. Extended Flexible Learning staff is anxious to connect with you.
There are a couple of items in this week’s newsletter to pay special attention to. Our students can now check out library materials. See the Need to Know section for more details. And, if you have a fourth grader in your household, please note the opportunity to learn more about Westwood and 5th grade on February 25.
Teachers will be reaching out to you when it is time to return Wit & Wisdom Module 1 resources and pick-up Module 2. The next pick-up is being offered at different times for different grade levels based on when the new resources are needed. You will be receiving detailed information from your child’s teacher as the next scheduled pick-up draws near.
If your family wants to request a change from Extended Flexible Learning to learning at school full-time, you can make the request by contacting our school office February 22-26. We’ll be working to honor all requests as we begin the new trimester.
Enjoy these last few days of February. I am looking forward to warmer days ahead. Please reach out if you have questions or thoughts to share.
Take care,
Kimberly Fehringer

3rd Grade Music at Centerview
Students in 3rd grade music have been focusing on improvisation and racial equality with spirituals, blues, jazz and funk music during Black History Month.
3rd graders first learned about spirituals and secret, hidden messages written in music to assist slaves in escaping slavery via the Underground Railroad. Connections between civil rights and musicians quickly formed as students understood how stories and ideas for racial equality could be shared powerfully through music.
Many different musicians such as Louis Armstrong, B.B. King, Etta James, Trombone Shorty, and Alicia Keys were also discussed and listened to as students created their own improvisational melodies and rhythms, while thinking about the historical connections of Black music in America.
The students will use their improvisational lessons to assist them with their spring composition project while also learning some fundamental individual swing dance moves along the way! The music students connected their melodic and rhythmic lessons to various genres and how genres of music change over time, as demonstrated by artists like Black Violin and Trombone Shorty. Later this spring 3rd grade students will continue to explore these topics even as they write their own lyrics for social justice and change.
