Message from the Principal
WOW! On Thursday, two teachers were recognized as Collier County Outstanding Teachers of the Year by Dr. Kamela Patton and Dave Stump – 2015 Post Secondary Teacher of the Year is Bob Jackson and High School Teacher of the Year is Pat Metcalf. I am sharing a bit of what was written about both teachers who we are fortunate to have on our campus.
Bob Jackson
When you think of the six critical skills that form the foundation for 21st Century success in the workplace, they are the very same skills that form the foundation for an entrepreneur – information literacy, collaboration, communication, creativity and innovation, problem solving and responsible citizenship. It is those skills that LWIT Entrepreneurship instructor Bob Jackson embeds in his every day lessons with students to stimulate their curiosity. Furthermore, Bob engages students in real-life interactions with other entrepreneurs in community events such as the Junior Achievement Awards dinner, the SCORE Annual recognition luncheon, the Southwest Speakers Assembly and the Blue Chip Awards luncheon to name a few. Bob provides real life experiences that give students an opportunity to think a problem through from start to finish and come up with a solution. As an example, for the past two years, under his guidance, students have placed and won business competition plans at Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Annual Entrepreneurship Challenge and Hodges University Business Plan competition. Bob came to teaching as a second career after retiring from a successful banking career. Mr. Jackson wanted to “give back to the community” and found that teaching was the way to help prepare the next generation. During his teaching career he has taught English for Speakers of Other Languages, Adult Basic Literacy and GED and of course, Entrepreneurship and Marketing.
Pat Metcalf
Pat utilizes numerous strategies to foster curiosity in both the staff members she mentors and the students she instructs in her role as reading coach. She uses curiosity as a motivator or hook at the introduction of a lesson and models how a thought-provoking question, statement or problem-solving activity leads to staff and student engagement right from the beginning. Her lessons include higher-order questions and she has successfully created an atmosphere where staff and students are encouraged to raise questions, generate hypotheses through collaborative discussions and to test their original hypotheses. Not only is curiosity aroused, but her colleagues and students also increase their confidence levels. Pat also allows for adequate time in order for exploration of themes and ideas to take place, whether it be in the classroom or when presenting a staff development workshop on a reading or language arts topic so that her "students" are able to dig deeper and learn as much as possible. She also allows for student choice and recognizes that if something is intrinsically motivating for her students it will sustain curiosity and take her lessons to a new level.
Please join us on Monday, April 6 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the dining room to congratulate them and celebrate their accomplishments.

Tech Corner
Instructional Strategy - April is National Poetry Month and though one typically thinks of this content limited to English, there really is poetry everywhere. In helping students to revise knowledge (Marzano element #20) it often helps to view from different perspectives. Using Discovery Education’s Spotlight on Strategies Multimedia Poetry Slam as a starting point, I created a Six Word Story using Haiku Deck to respond to Billy Collins’ poem, Adolescence (a TedTalk video). Additional Six Word Story examples are here (adults) and here (teens). Though the original Six Word Story was limited to text , the power of multimedia and visual literacy can enhance our Six Word Stories today and can promote deeper thinking.
Photos for Class - This is an awesome site for searching and attributing Creative Commons licensed photographs. It easily insures that neither you nor your students are infringing upon copyright law by automatically adding the citation on to the image before it downloads. Here is a quick video on how to use the website search for and attribution of photographs.
Tech Tool Tuesday - Tuesday, April 7th @2:35pm in 2-233, with a continuing look at YouTube - this time we’ll focus on uploading and editing video in My Channel. Be sure to bring your charged iPad.
