Hispanic Heritage Month at Aspen
Celebrating cultures & contributions of Hispanic Americans!
In the United States, September 15th – October 15th is Hispanic Heritage Month. It is a time to celebrate the cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from the Caribbean, Central and South America, Mexico, and Spain. Did you know that there are 54 million Hispanics and Latinos in the United States? That’s a lot of people to celebrate!
The idea to do so began as a week-long observance in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson, and was extended for a full month 20 years later in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. September 15th is special because it’s Independence Day for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates their independence one day later, while Chile and Belize honor theirs on September 18th and September 21st.
From now until October 15th, we will be sharing about different stories and people of Hispanic Heritage. If you are of Hispanic or Latino heritage, and you would like to share a story about cultural traditions or celebrations that you cherish as a family, please contact Mrs. Tietjen at mtietjen@conejousd.org. We would love to share with all of our Roadrunners!
Please share the video below with your child. It was created by Gabriella Magdaleno, a CVUSD elementary school counselor. Thank you for celebrating with us!
