MISD Social and Emotional Learning Resources
Happy New Year! We are excited to bring you a new way of delivering SEL resources for you to use in your classroom each 6 weeks.
Our goal is to focus on ONE SEL Core Competency each 6 weeks and to provide lessons for all grade levels under that competency of focus. You will notice many competencies cross over which just means the emphasis on that skill is greater and should be revisited often!
We hope you find our newsletter easy to navigate and available at your fingertips!
We are here to assist any way possible. We are available for presentations, workshops (parent student and/or staff) and any individual needs that arise on your campus.

4th 6 weeks Focus - Self-Management Skills
Self Management is the ability to successfully regulate one's emotions, thoughts and behaviors in different situations - effectively managing stress, controlling impulses, and motivating oneself. The ability to set and work toward personal and academic goals.
You will find links to lessons for grades PK-5 and 6-12 that relate to topics under Self-Management. These are quick SEL lessons to incorporate into your classroom as you see fit.
Also included are some highlight activities that center around setting goals as we enter into a new semester.
EMPOWER - Self-Management SEL Lessons
They are separated into 2 categories; however, you will find some of the lessons that are in both folders as they are appropriate for all grades:
- PK-5th Grade
- 6th-12th Grade

ONE Word Challenge
Discover the Power of One Word
9 out of 10 people will fail with their resolutions. 50% of resolution makers will fail by the end of January.
But One Word sticks!
One word gives you meaning and mission, passion and purpose. One word helps you focus on what matters most. This year, why not stop making New Year's resolutions and started picking One Word for the upcoming year. No resolutions, no goals... just One Word that helps you be your best and create a great year.
What One Word will give you meaning, purpose and focus? Do this activity with your students, family, colleagues, etc. Share the pictures with us and hold each other accountable (see examples in pics below).

Make 2021 the BEST as we work on ourselves as leaders for the people we serve!
Name It, Claim It, Explain It!
As you and your leadership team are visiting classrooms (in person or virtual), become a scout for best practices to spotlight. When you see something excellent, snap a quick picture.
At your next staff meeting or in your weekly staff communication, show the picture (or pictures), and ask the staff member belonging to the picture to:
Claim it. (Hey! That’s me or my class or my activity!)
Name it. (Tell everyone what he/she is doing or name the activity.)
Explain it. (Explain the how and why.)
Use this activity to celebrate the great things happening in your classrooms and provide some bite-sized professional development led by the experts - your teachers! Everyone learns and some hard-working teachers get a surprise affirmation!
