Our Mission
Anacostia High School prepares students to dismantle systems of inequity through nurturing, challenging, relevant, and joyful learning experiences. Our aim is to empower students to be self-aware, critical thinkers that are stewards of the community that positively influence the world.
Hello Ana Family
We are so thrilled to start the new school year! Though we are in the middle of a racial and global health pandemic, seeing our students and families brings hope and light to our team. Virtual learning is a challenge, but it is also an opportunity to explore knowledge in new ways! Virtual learning will allow students to practice skills they will need for college and career. If you are having trouble with your technology, course schedules, learning programs, or need mental health support, please contact us immediately at anacostiahigh@k12.dc.gov.
This year we are fully implementing our Redesign Big Bets! Our 9th and 10th-grade classes will be immersed in Project-Based Learning. We extended our career academies and now offer Public Leadership and Civil Engineering Academies. Every 9th-grade student is assigned to a Dream Team captain! Our three big bets: (1) Project-Based Learning, (2) NAF Academics, and (3)Dream Team are essential to our identity at Anacostia. Also, every student in grades 11-12th has been assigned a care team member. Be sure you know who your child's care and dream team captain. If you aren't sure, give us a call!
Tenth graders will also take a course called Tenacity this year. Tenacity is a career skills course that also teaches about smart money management. This course will prepare students to take on internships in the summer and during their junior and senior years.
We've made all these investments because of what we heard from you! Last year we surveyed, talked with and listened to over 700 stakeholders as a part of our Redesign work. We are designing a school built for the community by the community. We know that together we can do anything!
Please join us at Back to School Night!
I am looking forward to a great year!

Anacostia Redesign Updates (#AnaXdesign)
As many of you know, we are in our implementation year of Redesign! We will spend the year launching our Big Bets!
Big Bet 1: Project-Based Learning
9th and 10th-grade teachers spent three weeks in training with New Tech Network, our Project-Based Learning partner. In PBL, learning is contextual, creative, and shared. Students collaborate on meaningful projects requiring critical thinking, creativity, and communication to answer challenging questions or solve complex problems. Beginning in semester two, we will be sharing the project process and topics with you!
Big Bet 2: NAF Academies
We now have over 100 students enrolled (40% increase) in our NAF academies! Students are exploring careers in Civil Engineering and Architecture and Public Leadership (law, government, public service). In NAF academies, students learn the skills necessary for college and career success and get opportunities to engage in internships.
Big Bet 3: Dream Team
Every 9th-grade student is assigned a Dream Team captain. The student designs their dream team. The team consists of a school-based mentor, family, and/or community member. Dream teams have already started meeting! Be sure you know your child's dream team captain!
