KTS Newsletter
Term 1, Week 7, Tuesday 15 March 2022
Tena koutou e te whānau o Kohia Terrace School
A warm KTS welcome to Avalyn, who started in Room 1 on Monday.
Aren’t we lucky with this weather? It is great to have the sun to allow classes to spend as much time outside as possible during the school day. Long may it continue. Koru had a fantastic time with the Conscious Kids programme at Melville Park last week; see below for some photos of the day.
At the Board meeting last week we signed off the charter and annual plan for 2022. There are four main goals we are working on for the year; two around literacy and two focusing on the development of our bicultural competence and awareness of our local area history. The summary of the charter can be found HERE with the full charter and accompanying annual plan linked on the Board page of the school website.
Rachel Oram has been a member of the Board for the last three years but as the Board elections are not until September this year, has decided to step back now. We would like to thank Rachel sincerely for her service to the school.
A reminder that we do have the Board elections this year (September). If being on the Board is something that may interest you, it may be worth your while to come along to a meeting to get more of a sense of what we do. Please email me (alison@kts.school.nz) and I can send through the ZOOM link. Our next meeting is Wednesday April 13th.
Finally, we have now included a link on the website so you can keep track of the house competition through the year. You can find the link in the menu on the left hand side under the general information booklet for 2022. Congratulations to Hillary for their win last week – you are asked to wear blue on Friday.
Have a good week everyone, and keep safe – Alison
Three Way Learning Conferences
We are very much looking forward to seeing you (albeit on ZOOM) for Three Way Learning Conferences this afternoon and on Thursday. If you have not done so yet, please book your slot in the usual way on https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/ using the passcode 9e3mf for Thursday. I have closed these now for this afternoon but will open them up again at 7.00pm tonight for Thursday. Teachers have sent through a Zoom link and will admit you from the waiting room once they are free. This is the time to discuss up-to-date assessment data and students will share their new learning goals. We hope you enjoy this opportunity to connect together as a teaching and learning team.
As we are keeping bubbles separate, we are realistically not able to have the students in the hall on Thursday 17th from 1.30pm. We respectfully ask that students be picked up early, as per the following:
12.30 - Year 1 - from junior gate
12.30 - Year 2 - from front gate
12.35 - Year 7 and 8 students, and siblings, released to walk home
12.40 - Year 3–6 students released
Thank you SO much to those parents who have completed this form already. We do need to hear from all of you though - so if you have not yet done so, please click complete this form
We will have some staff available to supervise students where an early pick is not possible.
COVID update
We continue to see small numbers of cases in the school. In fact, there was a day or two last week in which we had no reported cases. However, we do have a small cluster in Room 10 which is clearly student-to-student transmission.
We will continue to email classes when there is a positive case and that student has been at school for the 48 hours prior to being symptomatic or testing positive. We also email directly the students who sit at the same table to ensure an extra layer of safety.
I am regularly in contact with the principals of our neighbouring schools. Talking to them it is clear we are doing extremely well; our staff are being particularly careful so we have maintained classes throughout, the majority of our students who are positive have been exposed outside of school contacts and we have high attendance rates. Yesterday we had 85% of students on site.
Thank you so much for your care and attention to this. The consistency of mask wearing is really high; even in our Year 1 – 3 classes. All this helps.
Here is the updated infographic on contact identification. You might also find the website “How long do I need to isolate” handy. Let’s hope that we are at the peak of this and we can get back to a relative sense of normal soon.
A reminder that the result of any RAT taken, whether positive or negative, should be logged on “My Covid Record”.
Week 6 Certificates
Congratulations to the following students who received a KTS Learner Competency certificate at last week’s Azoombly:
PTA Update
After a great PTA meeting last week, the parent liaison for your child’s class will shortly be introducing themselves (if they haven’t already) and inviting you to join the class What's App group to keep families connected. The Year 1 and 4 groups are already going which is awesome.
School PickUp is still going strong – have you taken a look at this recently? This is an online store where 50% of every sale comes directly to our school. Click on this link to see the huge range of quality products available: School PickUp
Samosa Fundraiser
We are excited to announce that the PTA will be offering samosas for sale over the next few weeks, with ordering opening soon. These are super delicious and such a good thing to keep in the freezer for a quick snack or meal (especially if you are isolating!). Start spreading the word among friends, family, neighbours and workmates. More details to come.
In other news, our Term 1 Ice Cream Sale is coming up on Friday April 1st. We will be selling Popsicles, Frujus and Trumpets for $2–3 after school. Mark it on your calendar now!
