Wilsonville High School Named Unified Champion School
Wilsonville High School received a Unified Champion Schools National Banner at the Youth Leadership Summit on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Unified Sports is a program through Special Olympics that blends equal numbers of Special Olympics athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities (also known as unified partners) into one team.
Wilsonville High School was named a national Champion school after completing an application process last spring. Special Olympics determined that Wilsonville High School had met national standards of excellence in the areas of inclusion, advocacy, and respect. Wilsonville High School joins West Linn High School, who was named a Champion School last school year.
SAFETY SPOTLIGHT — Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan
Every week, the district will highlight an aspect of safety and security in West Linn-Wilsonville through our Safety Spotlight. This week we focus on Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
The West Linn-Wilsonville School District utilizes an IPM to remediate risks posed by pests such as mice, cockroaches, yellow jackets, and pest-causing factors such as weeds. The district’s IPM was first implemented in 2012, relying on an adopted and approved list of herbicides that are compliant with Oregon law for use on public school grounds and developed and published by Oregon State University.
The West Linn-Wilsonville School District has reduced chemical use of herbicides and pesticides by approximately 80 percent since 2012, administering one or fewer applications per year at each school. The district also utilizes targeted spraying, making sure to use minimal amounts of herbicide only where it is absolutely necessary.
The district might use targeting spraying to tackle problem areas in cracks in district asphalt, along fence lines where it is difficult to hand weed, and when overgrown areas create large bee populations that endanger students. The district does NOT engage in any applications for aesthetic purposes. The district also does NOT engage in preventative spraying, only using herbicides when absolutely necessary.
Additionally, West Linn-Wilsonville is currently exploring alternative options to pesticide and herbicide spraying. Specifically, the district is experimenting with weed management through steaming application as well as preventative measures that don’t require chemical application.

Parent Night for Dyslexia Awareness
The district will update families on how West Linn-Wilsonville is building capacity and understanding of dyslexia in schools. This includes staff professional learning, a new screening system that aligns with state statutes, and effective instruction and intervention. A large portion of the Oct. 29 meeting will allow for parent input as the district looks to develop an effective system for parent communication around the screening process.

SafeOregon TipLine Provides Anonymous Reporting Resource for Students
In an effort to improve student safety across all West Linn-Wilsonville schools, the District continues its partnership with SafeOregon and the SafeOregon TipLine. Many students already report issues of safety concerns, bullying, harassment, or possible suicidal thoughts to trusted adults around them, and the District will continue to foster an environment where children feel comfortable to confide in parents, teachers, school counselors, or building administrators. But in an effort to provide even more resources for students, the State of Oregon has developed an additional channel and method for obtaining help called the SafeOregon Tip Line.
The goal of the SafeOregon tip line is to prevent threats to school safety by providing schools and communities with a relevant reporting tool. Tips can be submitted by students through email, phone, text messages, the Safe Oregon mobile app or web portal. Tips are quickly reviewed by SafeOregon technicians, and are then passed to school administrators and local law enforcement agencies. If the tip requires an urgent response, technicians from Safe Oregon will call 911 for immediate help, as well as provide information to West Linn-Wilsonville school administration or school officials.
West Linn-Wilsonville administration will respond to all tips in an appropriate and timely matter, which can include gathering more information, communicating with key stakeholders, using the District Threat Assessment System, using the District Suicide Risk Assessment process, connecting the student with additional resources, contacting law enforcement, or any other responses that are appropriate.
You can learn more about Safe Oregon at http://safeoregon.com/, or contact your child’s counselor for more information.
Digital Citizenship Theme of the Month — Internet Safety
West Linn-Wilsonville selects a different digital safety theme for every month. This month's theme is Internet Safety, which was picked very intentionally. During September, many students were introduced to a new set of technology resources that they may have at their disposal. As this turns from introduction to regular use, it is important for students to develop an awareness of ways to stay safe online.
To read the 10 pieces of useful advice, please visit the 'Digital Safety' section of the district website.
