Wildcat Weekly
Sullivan Middle School September 9 , 2022
Principals Message
Thank you to our PTO for organizing and hosting a breakfast for our Sullivan Staff on Friday. We truly felt the love and support from our community and parents!
This week at SMS did not lack in excitement and drama despite a shortened week, some construction on our staff restrooms, and our very unexpected water main break/ day off Thursday. Our Wildcat Staff and Students did amazing and maintained a positive attitude despite the week and hot weather.
We has school pictures this week and it was all smiles for our students. We will have make up pictures in October. I will send more information out on the date next week.
We will also be rescheduling our Back to School Dance that was cancelled due to the water main break. Mrs. Breckenridge will send out more information when the ASB students decide on the best time.
This week we look forward to engaging with our parents at Back to School Night, Thursday 9/15 from 5:00 pm to 7:00pm. I will welcome everyone to our new school year in the MPR starting at 5:00 pm. Parents will be dismissed to classes to meet the teachers starting at 5:25 pm. The evening will end at 7:00 pm.
Exciting opportunity for our Wildcat students:
One of the amazing partners who we are working with this fall for after school enrichment is CMU professor Po-Shen Loh.
Dr. Loh is offering a virtual math class for students in grades 5-7 which is an introductory tour through all areas of beyond-curricular math, including Algebra, Geometry, Combinatorics, Number Theory, and Probability. The class is designed to inspire students to love challenging math and creativity. BUSD is fortunate to partner with Dr. Loh as he currently leads the US Olympic Math Team for the International Math Olympiad.
This is a great opportunity for students who are strong in math and looking for an accelerated course to challenge and engage them. The course is on the enrichment portal (BUSD Enrichment Portal (TK-6) by 6Crickets ) and is called Creative Math: Introduction (1). It will be a virtual class on Tuesday nights from 7-8 PM.
The Learner-Centered Collaborative Survey
We are excited to launch a student survey beginning on September 13 and will administer it to students in grades 4-12.
The purpose of the survey is to gather feedback about how students are experiencing learning in Bonsall Unified. The survey was designed by the Learner-Centered Collaborative and it is anonymous, research-informed, and consists of 27 questions connected to 3 primary learner outcomes: agency, collaboration, and real-world problem solving.
Agency is about the learner demonstrating an ability to meet their unique, self-generated goals. Collaboration is an umbrella term that describes the set of habits and skills critical for social interaction. Problem solving is where the application of self-agency and collaboration results in improvements for the benefit of a community.
Your student's Advisory teacher will administer the survey this week during advisory.

These fall programs will start in September but don't delay as they will fill up quickly! PARENTS WE NEED YOUR HELP. Drop off and Pick up School Information.
Parents, Thank you for making our drop off and pick up a smooth success.
School safety is our main priority and the communication about dropping off and picking up students is crucial.
Because of limited supervision:
Students may be dropped off at 7:30 am unless the student is attending the before-school program.
Students must be picked up no later than 3:00 pm unless the student is in the after-school program.
*If you need to drop off earlier or pick up later than these times please check out our before and after school care.
If students are left later than 20 minutes after school they will be escorted to the after school program.
Thank you in advance.
Health and Safety
Starting Monday all visitors to the school, including parents, community members, contractors and volunteers will need to scan their Identification into the Raptor System to gain entry to the BHS/SMS campus.
What is the Raptor System?
Raptor is a visitor management system that enhances school security by reading a visitor's drivers’ license (or other approved government issued ID), comparing information against a sex offender and law enforcement databases to alert school administrators and local law enforcement if a match is found. Once cleared through the system, a visitor badge is produced that includes a photo, name of the visitor, date & time, and destination. The Raptor system is designed to permanently replace paper sign ins.
How does Raptor work?
Raptor compares government-issued ID information to a database that contains registered sex offenders from 50 states, law enforcement databases, and local flags placed into Raptor by district or school personnel. In the event of a match, Raptor alerts designated school
officials.
What is the purpose of the Raptor system?
Raptor enhances and automates visitor management. By proactively alerting personnel to certain potential threats, Raptor allows school administrators and, at times local law enforcement, to take appropriate steps to keep our students, employees, and visitors safe. For approved visitors, the system prints visitor badges that include the visitor’s name, photo, date, and destination. Those badges enable school personnel to quickly determine if visitors are in areas where they should, or should not be.
Why is the Bonsall Unified School District using this system?
The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. Raptor will provide a consistent, standardized system to track visitors and volunteers. This is especially useful during emergencies to know who is on campus. The system quickly prints visitor badges that include a photo, the name of the visitor, time & date and destination.
Does the school/District have the right to require visitors, even parents, to produce identification before entering the school?
Yes. In accordance with California Penal Code 627, school officials are required to know who is in the building and why they are there, particularly when a student is involved (e.g. early pickup). School officials need to be able to confirm that an individual has the authority to have access to the student. In addition to requiring visitors to give their name and purpose for visiting, it also requires visitors to present proof of identity.
What types of IDs will work in Raptor?
Raptor is able to scan all U.S. government issued licenses, identification cards, s, Matrícula consular ID cards, permanent resident card, active military cards, and passport ID cards (not the full passport).
What does a visitor do if he/she doesn’t have a government-issued ID?
Visitors without a government-issued ID will be required to meet with site administratration. These individuals will be asked to provide their last name, first name, and date of birth for manual entry into Raptor.
Where can I obtain a Government-issued form of identification?
For a CA License visit a local DMV office or go to: www.dmv.org.
For a Military ID card please go to: www.cac.mil/uniformedservices-id-card/
For a Permanent Resident Card please go to: www.uscis.gov/i-90
It is important to note that all parents have a right to participate in their child’s education. If you have any questions about the Raptor system please contact Ms. James at Angela.James@bonsallusd.com
In regards to COVID-19, Bonsall Unified School District continues to prioritize school safety and in-person learning for all students.
In-person learning will continue as we launch the 2022-2023 school year and Masks and COVID vaccines are NOT required in our District. Students who wear a mask will be supported and respected.
With this in mind, BUSD asks all students to practice frequent handwashing, covering one's mouth when sneezing, and take measures to foster a healthy immune system (i.e. proper nutrition, exercise, and rest).
In turn, BUSD will continue to place an emphasis on the proper sanitation of all District schools and facilities and employ various COVID-19 mitigation strategies.
If your student tests positive for COVID-19 please report the result to the school and know they must stay at home for a minimum of 5 days. During this time we encourage you to monitor your students for their well-being and return them to school once they are symptom-free and test negative.
BUSD is and will remain in compliance with all county and state mandates regarding COVID-19.

Lunch Information
All students eat for free.
The California Department of Education and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it’s California Meals for All program for the 2022-23 school year. This is a statewide program offering Universal Meals for all school children. The Universal Meal Program will allow us to continue to provide 100% free meals for all children. Students will be able to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch through this program. California Meals for All is great news because:
- CA Meals for All ensures daily access to a free breakfast and free lunch for all students, regardless of program eligibility. This benefits families at all income levels!
- Free meals foster a more positive culture around school meals.
- Children can focus on learning instead of being hungry or feeling uncomfortable choosing school meals.
- Nutrition program staff can focus on supporting students directly, not collecting payments.
- School meals are healthy!
- Having a consistent option for healthy meals helps nourish students to prepare them for life inside and outside the classroom.
- Bonsall Unified School District Nutrition Services will continue to hold to high quality and nutrition standards, which meet or exceed guidelines provided by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and California Department of Education (CDE).
