Newsletter #5 How the World Works
UOI 5: How the World Works
An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
Central idea: We can use force to help things move.
Key concepts: Function, Connection, Causation
Related concepts: similarities, differences, roles, behavior, systems
Lines of inquiry
- Pushes and pulls as forces (Function)
- Gravity as a force (Connection)
- How forces effect movement (Causation)
UOI Field Trip: Maryland Science Center May 5th
Six Flags Math/Science Day May 12th:
Get ready for some fun? Students will enjoy a day of fun and learning at Six Flags America! Everyone likes the thrill of rides, but how do they work? How do coasters soar so high? Why does the wheel turn round and round as we travel up and come back down? How far and fast can each ride go? These are some questions students will explore as they have the opportunity to sit on rides and ask and answer many of these questions.
What Are We Learning This Unit?
Math
- Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones
- Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equation
- Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10
- Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
ENGLISH
READING:
- With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story
- Recognize common types of texts (e.g., storybooks, poems).
- Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding.
- Distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of the letters that differ.
WRITING:
- Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
- With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.
- With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
SPEAKING AND LISTENING:
LANGUAGE:
Arabic
Students will continue with their Arabic alphabet (ك-ن) while extending their Arabic vocabulary. The students focus this UOI is their reading skills. Because students are going to be reading from the Qaidah Nooraniyah, it is best that they also incorporate their reading and comprehension skills in Arabic class as well. Students will also continue enhancing their handwriting skills.
· I can occasionally identify the sound of a character or a word
· I can recognize the sound of a few letters when they are spoken or spelled out.
Science
Science: Materials and Motion:
- Students will investigate the strength of pushes and pulls needed to move an object.
- Students will use gravity to pull balls down slopes to investiage what happens when things collide.
- Students will find ways to change the strength and direction of the pull on a rolling ball to meet design challenges.
- Students will change the strength of a push on a balloon rocket flying on a line to explore cause and effect.
Qur'an
Students will continue with their memorization of the Quran, along with the meanings and Tafseer of the Surahs. Students will also be introduced to the Qaaidah Nooraniyah to help enhance their Arabic reading skills.
- Memorization of Surah Humazah
- Memorization of Surah Asr

- What to say when someone sneezes.
- Dua when exiting the house.
- Memorize dua for entering and exiting the bathroom.
- Memorize dua of travel.
Art
Art experiences
Students will explore the connection between Art and mechanic science (Gravity, motion, forces)
in dripping paint project, marble painting and spin painting.
Students will create their own designed and patterned paper using tempera paint.
Students will use their designed paper to create pop-up cards.
Targeted MSDE Standards
2.0 Historical, Cultural, and Social Context: Students will demonstrate an understanding of visual arts as an essential aspect of history and human experience.
1. Determine ways in which works of art express ideas about self, other people, places, and events
b. Use selected works of art as inspiration to express ideas visually and verbally
2. Discuss reasons why people (including self) create and use art by studying artworks and other sources of information
b. Identify reasons for creating personal artworks.
