Happy Spring Break!

Big picture
Dear Butler Elementary Families,

We have completed three of our four quarters for the 2020-2021 school year; and what a year it has been! I would like to share that as we look ahead to the fall, we will be returning to a normal school day!

We would like to thank you for your kindness, sacrifice, and support during this unprecedented school year. You have worked WITH us to keep our school healthy and safe in addition to keeping your child in a routine of learning whether we were in person or on remote. It was a team effort from our families, the administrative team, the transportation department, the food service department, the office staff, and finally the teachers. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you!!

We are working on having some end-of-the-year events during the month of May. We are currently planning awards ceremonies, preschool graduation, kindergarten graduation, DARE graduation, Field Day, and bringing outside organizations to provide field trip experiences on site. So, stay tuned and keep checking your child's folder, REMIND, and school DOJO for important information!

Have a wonderful spring break!!

2020-2021 PROMOTION UPDATE

The temporary change in section 4 of House Bill 409 of the 133rd General Assembly impacts the 2020-2021 promotion criteria for the Third Grade Reading Guarantee to account for the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on student learning. Under this change, no school district, community school, STEM school and no chartered nonpublic school shall retain a student in the third grade based solely on a student's academic performance in reading in the 2020-2021 school year unless the principal of the school building and the student's reading teacher agree the student is reading below grade level and is not prepared to be promoted to the fourth grade.

Under this temporary change to the Third Grade Reading Guarantee for the 2020-2021 school year, no student should be retained for not meeting the promotion score or reading subscore on Ohio’s State Test for grade 3 English language arts unless the child’s principal and reading teacher decide otherwise. Districts and schools may continue to use the Ohio State Test for grade 3 English language arts promotion score, reading subscore and alternative assessment scores for instructional purposes.

Are you interested in Girl Scouts?

Happy Spring! I hope all is well. It’s been a little while and I wanted to check in with you to see if we can be helpful in the last few months of what has turned out to be a very different school year and share with you a few updates on the amazing things area Girl Scouts have been up to over the last several months.

Both troops just wrapped up a successful cookie season exceeding their goals to earn a trip to the Zoo. They have been holding meetings virtually and in person when able and have been working on badges covering a variety of STEM and entrepreneurship topics. They have also participated in service projects including cleaning the B&O Bike Trail and making bags and blankets for Richland Co Children Services.

While we were not able to get more friends from school to join us in the fall to start another troop, these girls have not let COVID ruin their fun and are eager to share Girl Scouting with even more sisters this spring. We have a Girl Scouts in the Outdoors: Spring Break Park Tour from March 29 – April 8th and will be meeting with girls at 10 Richland County Parks for an hour of games and activities in the outdoors.

We will be stopping in Butler at Hitchman Park on 3/31 at 10:30 AM and Palm Park in Bellville on 4/1 at 1 PM and would like to invite other girls to join us to learn more about Girl Scouts and to have fun in the outdoors! Girls can join us at any of the other stops around Richland County too! (as long as they don’t have school, of course) If you can post any of the attached invitations anywhere to help us spread the word, I’d greatly appreciate it. If you need information in a different file format, just let me know.

We’ve been busy this year with several service projects, and are always looking for ways to help our communities. Due to COVID, the girls have become quite the experts at writing cards, and making posters, and they love the outdoors. If you have any projects that we can help with using these skills or others, please let me know. Thank you!
