HOLY ROSARY NEWSLETTER
Term 3 Week 8 - 8 September
FROM MARK:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Today provides the opportunity to share this significant moment in the Catholic calendar with you.
To all our children making their First Holy Communion on Saturday night or Sunday morning, our prayers are with you and your families at this special time in your lives. Go well.
This week’s Nights of the Notables were most successful, and reflect loads of preparation by the children in Year Five. Congratulations to you all!
To Michelle Della Franca and her band of helpers we are in awe of your organisational skills to make today’s Lapathon a reality. Plenty has gone on behind the scenes to make this real. This support for the Holy Rosary Community is just fabulous! Thank you so much.
Athletics carnival next Friday. Coffee van in attendance! This should be another memorable day and we hope to see loads of you there.
Best wishes
Mark de Kluyver
Principal

STAFFING UPDATE – YEAR FIVE
Pat Winton is confirmed to return to school at the beginning of term four, but Rosemary Ledger will not as she will be continuing her treatment. Pat will continue to teach the children for three days per week. As Mrs Cianflone is expecting her baby not long after term three ends she is not in a position to continue. Accordingly I have asked Sandra Frodsham, teaching two days per week in in 5D to teach the 5C gang two days per week for term four, and Liz Laverock to teach 5D full time, also for term four.
Our concern has been to ensure that the children in 5C are taught by teachers they know, and for continuity in terms of their timetables and our expectations. I’d like to thank Sandra and Liz for being happy to support all of the Year Five children in this way.
GRASS
You will note the dreadful state of the grass on the Oval and the Dominican Playground. The conversation about what to do has been long and difficult. There is major work required to rehabilitate both areas, and it will take a lot of time to really work. Accordingly I am sorry to say that these two grassed areas will be closed for the rest of the year, starting after our athletics carnival. After school oval bookings have also been cancelled.
The only exception could be the one night where we plan to use the Dominican Playground for our End of Year Concert on December 5th, if it is ok to do so, otherwise it may be a 'Car Park' event.
We are also limiting the use of the Kindy and Preprimary playgrounds, which close promptly at the end of their school day. The ground needs time to recover before the next day. We don’t want it to deteriorate further. After school gatherings, which in the last 2 years have really become popular will have to take place offsite as our OSHC uses the Dominican Playground Sandpit.
These are the last actions we want to take, but professional advice has been clear in that a lot of action and time is required to rehabilitate the grounds. Just using the Christmas holidays is not enough. Ailments like insect infestation, pythium, couch mite, salt, compaction and drainage, and uneven surfaces all need to be addressed.
Instead of the Dominican Playground’s grassed area, the Years 1-3 children will have the use of the undercover area. This together with the sandpit and Veritas Garden means that there will be plenty of space for them to play at recess and lunch time.
Likewise, instead of the oval, the Years 4-6 children will have the use of the gym. This together with their Nature Playground, and the basketball/netball courts, together with City of Stirling approval for occasional lunchtimes spent at Teakwood Park, means that they too will have a goodly amount of space.
Mr Flexman is ready to conduct Physical Education lessons on the courts and in the gym as well.
I’d like to thank the parents with expertise in this area who have been very helpful in deciphering the soil and water reports, and advising us on what has been proposed as a way forward.
Contracts for all our grassed areas are now in the hands of turf experts. With four months of treatment, the grounds next year should be better and stronger than they have ever been. Once recovered our focus will be to keep the grass in good shape and in the hands of turf experts so that we don’t have to take such drastic action again.
HOLY ROSARY COMMUNITY NEWS
Our year 5 Holy Rosary Netball team of girls managed to win Division 1 which is quite difficult considering there are 10 divisions. That makes them the best year 5 team out of 80 teams at Perth Netball Association. They have worked very hard all season and had a lot of fun doing it.
Last Thursday they appeared on Channel 9 weather as Netball team of the week with Scherri-Lee Biggs.
Newman Holy Rosary Raiders Basketball Club
Boys Year 4 Basketball - Our Year 4 boys have been playing basketball together for three years as part of the Newman Holy Rosary Raiders Club.
Coaches Brian Morison and Peter Williams (parents at our school) have been involved from the outset. They have really enjoyed watching the boys develop their skills whilst building their knowledge of the game and strengthening their team relationships.
The boys have had a great season. Well done - the school is proud of all your hard work!
Girls Year 4 Basketball - Our girls Raiders U10 team had a great season. We won…we lost…we drew, but we always had fun! Well done to the girls, and a big thanks to our coach Hayley Matcham and the parents for bringing their girls to training and the games.

The Family Businesses of Holy Rosary
The Business Directory is a group of school businesses who want to support our School Community.
As a Parent Community we would love to see a culture of thinking Holy Rosary first! Please have a look through the directory to see what these businesses might be able to do for you. If you would like to be listed please contact Mark Nolan on mark@sensefs.com.au.
Library News
As we reach the end of term 3, invoices will be sent home for lost/misplaced/very overdue books so that families can look for them over the holidays and replace them if necessary for the start of for Term 4, which is always a busy one. Thank you so much for your understanding as a library with no books is just a room! Next Thursday 14th September, we are participating in Australian Reading Hour. This wonderful initiative encourages and reminds us to read to our children or allow them to relax and read. I can’t wait! Happy reading.

It is best described as a journey of faith which passes through a number of different phases and focuses on conversation of the heart and mind on our way to accepting Jesus Christ in our daily lives.
The meetings will commence on Tuesday 10th October in the Parish Office at 7.30–9.00pm. For further information, please email the Pastoral Associate, Kaye Shervington -

Bring home a big brother or sister and bring French, Italian or Spanish culture to life!
Why not volunteer to host an international student from France, Italy or Spain next year? We have a small group of delightful students coming to Australia for 11 weeks to immerse in local Australian culture, experience our High schools, sports, environment and lifestyle. All these international students are around 15 or 16 years old, speak excellent English, have their own spending money, cover all school expenses, and we arrange all aspects of their program. They are looking forward to joining an Australian family for a short term cultural immersion stay. It’s fun and interesting to help these young people achieve their Australian dream. If you would like to know more, please email your interest to ICM on info@icm-education.com.au or call Georgie or Anja on 1800 500 501, or visit our website www.icm-education.com.
