Message from the Principal
Please take time to review the components of our newsletter related to social emotional learning, our Literacy Night for all students on September 21st, course fees that are due this month and our PTO Newsletter with details about our Gator Gallop. The Gator Gallop is October 7 and we are revealing a new obstacle course, dance party and bubble fun. Lots of surprises! All students will participate in the days events. Please know this is our largest fundraiser of the year and our students are collecting direction donations to supports our school! The students then commit to having fun outside walking, jumping, and galloping their way through the obstacle course! We appreciate your support and signing your children up online!
Parent teacher conferences are around the corner and will occur after fall break. More to come from your child's teacher near the end of the month.
Thank you for sharing your children with us and have a wonderful week.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL):
We value, nurture and explore feelings at Geist Elementary!
At GES, we support a whole-child approach to education. We choose to ‘Love First, Teach Second’. As a district, we strive to build foundations for Social Emotional Learning (SEL). “SEL is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions’, (Indiana School Mental Health Initiative).
During the first part of the school year, we are focused on Skills for Learning: Being Respectful Listeners, Focusing Attention, Using Self-Talk to Focus and Tackle Difficult Tasks and Being Assertive (Asking Questions for Understanding and Discovery).
We will then build on Empathy: To show compassion and kindness to others when they are struggling. How can we show compassion to others by our words, our gestures and our presence? A great conversation to have at home, as well.
Other topics include Emotion Management (Zones of Regulation), Mindfulness, Growth Mindset and Goal Setting, Problem-Solving and Digital Citizenship. More to come!
