Before I Fall
By Lauren Oliver
A Book Review By Logan Owens
What if you only had one day to live. What would you do? Who would you spend it with? In the novel, "Before I Fall" By Lauren Oliver, Samantha Kingston wakes up one day not knowing it is her last. All of this starts at a high school. Samantha is apart of your typical high school "mean girls" group. Her friends Lindsey, Elody, and Ally are the rulers of the school. One day, she gets in an accident and she dies, but she wakes up the next morning living the same day over again. Samantha relives this day 7 times. Each time she would do something different and trying to see if it changes the outcome at the end of the night. Throughout the novel Samantha changes and realizes the consequences and the things she has not known about her friends.
At the beginning of the book, you'll dislike Samantha. Throughout the story she grew to understand that there is more to life than surviving high school. Samantha is my favorite character because she realizes that she isn't the only person in high school that has struggles and unanswered questions. Samantha also realizes that all her and her friends have done is harass the students at their school. She comes to understand that she has made a mistake and wants things to change. I liked that the book went through each little change Samantha went through. Also, I could relate to Samantha and the actions she did because me also being in high school, I can see why she did what she did.
When I opened this book I wasn't expecting what I read. This book can connect with many high school girls and even adult women. Personally, I believe this book would reach out more to high school girls. It goes through what high school girls have to do to be popular and be accepted in school. Reading this book made me realize that even the meanest person in a school can change and think more about others. I highly recommend this book and it is also a book that could be a second read.
