End of Year Celebrations! June 24, 2016

Dear Families,

Please take a few minutes to enjoy our end of year celebrations newsletter! The last couple of weeks of school were quite busy (!) with learning activities, special programs, and events. Please look for one final newsletter within the coming week that will include our summer math and reading information.

Warm regards,

Principal Dianne Ellis

Preschool Graduation and End of Year Ceremony

June 7th marked the last day for our preschool classes as they celebrated a year of learning with their friends and our amazing preschool teachers and staff! We recognized each "graduate" who will be entering kindergarten as well as our returning 4 year old friends through morning and afternoon program celebrations! We wish to thank families for attending this event and for sharing your children with us. We just love them.

Kindergarten Nursery Rhymes 2016!

It was a little bitter sweet as we held our final Nursery Rhymes Program at Pleasant Street School in front of a packed audience. This signature event is so special and leaves lasting memories for children and families alike. As we move into ACES, our beautiful new school in the fall, there will certainly be new traditions and programs for families to enjoy! While taking pictures was a little tricky, Principal Ellis was able to take some to share below in a short video.

Special thanks to our kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Goldthwaite, Ms. Plourde, and Mrs. Webb, and our support staff and specialists, Mrs. Mann, Mrs. Jack, Mrs. Vitello, Mrs. Rix, Mrs. Chauvette, Mrs. McGrath, and Miss Leesha who worked together to make this such a successful program. Let's face it...your children were so awesome!

Caught Being Good

Here are some students (and a teacher!) we would like to recognize from our final week of school. From left to right, Evan with a whole page of Caught Being Goods, Ms. Leesha, Landon, Arianna, and Alex. Nice work!

Garden Club Final Week

Our garden club recently concluded with members having fun and celebrating in their successes. They marveled at the growth of their sunflowers, discovered wild strawberries growing along the building, and found a little frog to everyone's delight.

Special thanks to Mrs. Nancy Berthiaume for leading this program and for Ms. Sarah Piazza who has provided valuable assistance each week. This program is funded with a grant from the Athol Royalston Education Fund.

Field Day 2016

We were so happy the weather held out for our final Pleasant Street School Field Day. Thank you to the many parents and families who volunteered and helped make this day such a success. Special thanks to Eileen St. Jean for leading our faculty efforts to plan out and to coordinate our field day program.

Please click on the link to see a short video from this day. Special thanks to Sarah LeBlanc and Heidi Heuer for sharing their photos.

4th Grade Step Up

Our 4th Grade Step Up Ceremony was memorable as students were recognized with a certificate, for participation in Student Council, and for one student, Jaade, for perfect attendance! A highlight of the program was the presentation of the 4th grade slide show produced by Principal Ellis. The show, set to music, featured over 300 images including early days of class members in kindergarten, crazy hair day in second grade, hats days, cameos from third grade, and so much more!

Celebrating our English Language Learners

As the school year has come to an end we wanted to take a moment to recognize the wonderful learning and work of our ELL students at Pleasant Street and around the district. This diverse, yet connected group, has produced skits, held book publishing and author tea events, marched in the River Rat parade, and played a big role in the Multi-Cultural Festival. In addition some students traveled to Harvard Forest, the Athol Historical Society, baked pies, and even had the opportunity to go kayaking courtesy of an educational enrichment grant from the Athol Royalston Educational Fund. Special recognition is due to Beth Gospodarek, our talented ELL teacher, who challenges and inspires students to be their best.

Please enjoy this short video highlighting our awesome ELLs created by Ms. Gospodarek.

Camp Read S'More

We were excited to see so many families join us at our elementary district wide family literacy night. With activities, a photo booth, and free books to promote summer reading this Title One sponsored event was a terrific success. Special thanks to Jan Williams, Holly Cole, and Vivian Vargeletis for their work in organizing this family fun program.

All School Meeting

During our final all school meeting, 4th grade friends, Tony & Braydon, addressed the school about the work of their Keep the Peace Club and promoting the idea of having a buddy bench at school. It is the hope that this idea will carry forward at ACES next year. In addition to Reading Challenge recognitions, awards were also presented to Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Richardson's classes for having the best classwide attendance for the month of April and May. In addition, all students with perfect attendance for the month were recognized with a certificate.

Farewell Pleasant Street "Luau-Themed" Block Party!

A wonderful time was to be had at our Farewell to Pleasant Street Block Party. Families were invited to bring their own picnic dinner as we provided drinks and cake! The Luau theme, DJ dancing, bubble machine, photo booth, and face painting certainly added to the fun. While it is hard to imagine there can be too much cake ...we managed to have some left for the teachers' room on the last day of school! Special thanks are due to our fantastic PTO who sponsored this event and to PTO members who decorated, shopped, set up, cleaned up, and did everything else in between to make this night happen. Thank you for the heartfelt recognition, appreciation, and gift card given to Principal Ellis who will be leaving the school district after 5 years of service. Thank you!
