ELA Update
Reading Theme – We have begun our ELA series Story Town . We have started Theme 1 – Follow Me. Stories we will be reading include: Let’s Tap , The Van , and Big Rigs. Keep practicing those high frequency words and robust vocabulary! Please make sure that your child is reading or being read to for at least 10-15 minutes a night. This will continue through the year as our class Reading Log begins in October.
In writing we have been starting our journal writing and will soon begin becoming official story writers!
Handwriting has begun. Spacing is something we are all working on. Keep up the hard work! All letters and numbers will be reviewed. Remember start from the top down!
Spelling homework will begin on Monday, September 21st. The children will have daily homework (the green tic tac toe board was practiced in class for lessons 1 and 2). Please send the board back on Fridays with 3 choices marked off and a practice test on the back. Your child will receive a new board in the new week. The first spelling test will be Friday, September 25th.
Math Update
We have started our math series, Everyday Math. Math games and working on classroom routines such as calendar are important components of the program. The Unit 1 Newsletter (1.1 and 1.2) is located in the home link book given to parents on Back To School Night. There are many ideas for activities and games that can be done as a family, as well as an answer key for the upcoming home links in Unit 1. The newsletters are a great resource! Ask your child about some of the games they have been playing.
Math homework will be assigned nightly Monday-Thursday. Focus Facts are coming starting in October!
Homework and Misc. Items
Your child receieved a homework folder from me on the first day of school. In the clear back pouch of the folder will be a weekly homework checklist. Please leave this paper in the folder until the end of the week and on Friday I will take it out. Weekly work and homework once checked will be sent home on Fridays for child/ parent review over the weekend. Folders are then returned on Monday morning emptied out (unless your child has a note for me) and ready for a new weekly homework checklist. Homework is a review of what we are learning in school.
There is a NO snack policy at Audubon and first grade eats lunch at 11:05. Please make sure your child is eating a good breakfast. We do have a water fountain in our classroom and children may keep a water bottle in their backpack (or side pocket of their backpack).
If you have not already sent in an art smock for your child, please do so ASAP. Please make sure to label the tag with their name. They will be kept in a basket in the classroom.
