E-Learning Day for November 15th will be made up for GES K-4 the week of December 3rd
Dear HSE Families:
We are pleased to announce that all students will experience a high-quality eLearning day next month in order to make up for Thursday, November 15 when school was cancelled due to inclement weather.
What is an eLearning day?
An eLearning day is an IDOE-approved instructional day that can be used to make up instructional time through the use of technology. HSE Schools will be utilizing an eLearning day for an inclement weather make-up day.
How does an eLearning day look for students?
Students will receive online instruction provided by their teachers. These lessons will be interactive and relate to the curriculum for the specific class. Students will have access to their teachers via email. Teachers will let students know how and when they will be available when they make the assignments available on Monday, December 3.
When is the eLearning day happening?
Lessons will be communicated to students and their families on Monday, December 3. Students will have one week to complete their assignments. All work is due back to their teachers by Monday, December 10. Students who do not complete their work will be considered absent for November 15.
What if students have questions about their assignments?
Teachers will communicate to their students how they may be reached for questions or concerns. Likewise, students can ask questions to their teachers when at school the week of December 3.
By having an eLearning day, students will not be required to make up the missed day at the end of the school year.
Please note, should there be any further cancellation days students will have an eLearning day on the day of the cancellation.
If you have further questions regarding the eLearning day, we encourage you to speak with your child’s teachers.
Note from the Principal:
Take time to ask your children about our life skill of the month - Compassion. It aligns well with US National Holiday of Thanksgiving and the many holidays in December. How can we show compassion: kindness, caring and willingness to help others?
We have a great deal of information for your to view in the newsletter.
eLEARNING for Nov. 15th Makeup:
Above, the district made mention of our E-Learning experience for K-4. Please know the district team of teachers had meet multiple times in preparation and were to finalize in the coming weeks. Mother Nature came in with a surprise prior to our final approval! The team met this morning and we are ready to roll out this e-Learning Day as well as any future days that result in cancelation. Please look above and expect more details by/on December 3rd.
SCIENCE FAIR:
- I want to encourage all students 1st-4th grade to participate in our Science and Engineering fair! See below for details. We would like to see over 75 students participate in the project. This is an optional activity and yet a wonderful experience to dig into a topic of choice. I know my seventh grader just WONDERED -Which sense (touch, smell and hearing) was most effective in identifying objects? Ask your child what they WONDER about.
- Ask a question- Research- Construct Hypothesis-Test Hypothesis- Record Data- Draw Conclusion- Share at the Science Fair on January 15th! Deadline is December 19th. Help us reach our GES goal of 75 participants! See below for more information on the Fair.
HSE FOUNDATION: Please join us in supporting the HSE Foundation on #GivingTuesday! Our community, the PTO, district funds and HSE Foundation came together to make our Dinosaur Dig Pit and soon to be Pavilion become a reality! Scroll down to learn how to donate on November 27.
Career week is the week after break! We are so thankful for our many volunteers. We are very excited for you to come to school.
What is Marketplace?
The 3rd GES Marketplace will be Tuesday, March 26th. Our staff will begin the behind-the-scenes work in late November. One important step we've added this year is to match every "GES Business" with an outside Mentor Business. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you are available to mentor a "GES Business" on economics, marketing, production, etc. We want real world experience brought into the classroom.
Economics**Mathematics**Writing and the WORTHY skills of Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Problem Solving, Creativity, Hard work all to benefit an organization that betters our world!
- Two classes will be paired together to create a company
- The company will decide on a product to produce and request a loan in writing from the Gator PTO Trust and Loan.
- Supplies and materials will be ordered
- Company selects an organization to benefit from their company's profits
- Production begins
- Marketing begins
- Sales booth created and workers organized
- Marketplace Opens for the GES School Family to purchase goods
- The "GES Business" pays the Gator PTO Trust and Loan back.
- The profits go to organizations that students selected!
It is a great event that will take place during the day on March 26th. More information to come on the details of the morning shopping hours.
I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving break. Thanks for all you do to support your neighborhood school and thank you for sharing your children with us!

¡Hola!
My name is Stacey Zimmerman, and I am the Spanish teacher for the Global Studies Program. I am excited to be back at Geist Elementary School and working with your children!
During our time together, the students will be actively learning the Spanish language through whole group and small group games, hands-on-activities, songs, rhythm, stories, projects and movement. Material is taught through activities that stimulate a high level of student involvement.
Kindergarten and first grade students will be working on greetings and farewells, numbers, conversations and colors in Spanish. They will be learning about Mexico.
Second, third and fourth grade students will be learning numbers, conversations, colors, shapes and parts of the body in Spanish. In addition, they will be learning about Costa Rica.
We are off to a fantastic start in Spanish! It is wonderful to see the students’ enthusiasm and excitement to learn about new languages and cultures!
Sincerely,
Stacey Zimmerman

GES'S ANNUAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIR
Geist Elementary School's Annual Science and Engineering Fair will be held on Tuesday, January 15th. All participants should register by turning in the science fair registration BY DECEMBER 19TH. Project approval will be granted via email.
Frequently Asked Questions Concerning the Science Fair
What is the Science Fair?
The science fair is a voluntary, extra-curricular opportunity for all students (1-4) to study a science-related topic outside the classroom by either performing an actual experiment or designing an engineering project.
What is the purpose of the Science Fair?
The fair was started to encourage our children's scientific curiosity and introduce them to the many fields that comprise "science". We have had projects that investigated questions in biology, chemistry and physics. Children have grown plants, extracted iron from cereal, built electrical circuits using potatoes, and conducted surveys about whether individuals are more visual or auditory - just to name a few.
Why should my child participate?
It is a rare opportunity for your child to learn the steps of the scientific method or design process in a hands on way. The children will also get to practice their public speaking skills as they will present their projects to the judges. Your child will also get to see the projects of their classmates and learn new things in the process.
Is the fair judged?
Yes. Each project will be judged with a 100 point total. Students who score within the 100-90 point range will receive a blue ribbon. Students who score within the 80-89 point range will receive a red ribbon. Students who score within the 70-79 point range will receive a white ribbon. The grand champion in each grade will receive a metal and all students will receive a participation certificate. The fourth grade grand champion will represent GES at the regional science fair.
What should my project look like?
All projects should be submitted on a tri-fold display that details the steps of the project. If an experiment is conducted, the tri-fold should be organized using the scientific method. If an engineering project is completed, the tri-fold should be organized using the design process.
Can I work with a partner?
Yes, you may work with a partner. The maximum team size is 2.
If you have any questions, please email Susan Galliher at sgalliher@hse.k12.in.us
Join us in supporting the HSE Foundation. They partnered with us on the Dinosaur Dig pit as well as the Geist Pavilion (our building permit was just approved by Fishers!)
Dress your students for outside recess on those cold days!!
From the HSE/GES Student Handbook regarding RECESS:
...Recess will be held outdoors whenever possible. Precipitation, sunshine, cloud cover, wind chill, temperature, etc. are all considered when a decision is made for indoor recess. In general, recess will be held indoors when it is raining or the temperature/wind chill falls below 15 degrees Fahrenheit...These temperatures are based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
